Two of the most dominant players of the 1990s could be entering the Pro Football Hall of Fame this year.

Troy Aikman and the late Reggie White were among the 15 finalists announced yesterday for the Hall of Fame, joining Thurman Thomas and Warren Moon as finalists in their first years of eligibility.

Three to six of the finalists will be selected for the class of 2006, which will be announced Feb. 4.

Aikman quarterbacked Dallas to three Super Bowl titles between the 1992-1995 seasons. White, who died Dec. 26, 2004, went to two Super Bowls with Green Bay and was elected to 13 straight Pro Bowls. The defensive lineman is second on the all-time sacks list with 198.

Thomas was a star running back on the Buffalo teams that won four straight AFC titles from 1990-93. Moon threw for nearly 50,000 yards in the NFL after starting his career in the Canadian Football League.

The two seniors candidates, Dallas offensive tackle Rayfield Wright and Oakland coach and current broadcaster John Madden, were chosen by a special committee in August and went straight to the finals. The other 13 finalists were selected from a list of 25 semifinalists.

The remaining finalists are: linebackers Derrick Thomas and Harry Carson, defensive ends L.C. Greenwood and Claude Humphrey, offensive linemen Russ Grimm, Bob Kuechenberg and Gary Zimmerman and receivers Michael Irvin and Art Monk.

I sure hope Madden gets in this year. I've been saying for years...mostly to myself...why doesn't anyone ever talk about Madden getting into the Hall of Fame. Madden has the best regular season winning percentage of all time for coaches with at least 100 game (.750) and has the second best winning percentage including the playoffs of all time (.739). His final record as a coach was 112-39-7 and he won seven divisional titles and a Super Bowl in the 10 years he was head coach.

Those numbers alone should get him into the Hall of Fame, but when you add his post-coaching career as a broadcaster and ambassador for the game, it is a shame he wasn't nominated long ago.

Of course, Madden's absence from the Hall is nothing compared to the travesty of Art Monk not being in there, but that is for another post.

If there was ever a better outside linebacker than Derek Thomas I'd love to see him.

That guys was just the slightest shade below LT and should be a mortal lock for the HOF in my book.

I agree, that Madden should get in as well.

I'm still at a loss on how a receiver like Art Monk is not in the HOF.

This omission has caused me to sour a bit on the Football HOF induction committee.

I said on the other thread...the voters just don't seem to like him, which is a shame, considering his numbers. Unfortunately he seems stuck with Richard Dent and Harry Carson as a "tweener"...enough to be a finalist every year, not enough to get in. I'd be surprised if he gets in this year.

I see Reggie, DThomas, Aikman, and the 2 Veterans' nominees, Madden and Wright this year.

The Thurmanator has to be considered among the most dominant players of his era--the only player in history (unless someone after him has equaled it) to lead the entire NFL in total yards 4 consecutive years. Top-10 all-time rusher, 10 consecutive 1000 yard seasons, 4 Super Bowls--clearly he'll make it eventually, but IMO he's a first-ballot HoFer.

Am I missing something or wasn't Art Monk the all-time receptions leader until Jerry Rice came along?

If this doesn't warrant induction along with being a pivotal player on a Super Bowl team then I don't know what else he has to do to prove himself.

I agree completely, yes, you are right, and no, you aren't missing anything. I don't know why, but the voters don't seem to respect his stats or records as much. Maybe he was overshadowed by Largent and Rice, I don't know, but it seems that he just doesn't get the respect he deserves.

The real crime is that Lynn Swann is in with his mediocre numbers and overinflated ego, but Monk is not.
