PS2 vs. XBox:
I have PS2. I had PS1 (I think I still have it somewhere). The controller was the same, and that's what I think I was most interested in. My brother has XBox, and whenever we play, I can't get used to the controller. Granted, I'm only playing for a couple hours at a time, and I'm not smart enough to get used to it in that amount of time. But if I played long enough, and didn't play PS2, I'm sure I could get used to the controller, and PS2's advantage for me would be gone.
I don't know enough about XBox, but if load times are better on XBox (they almost have to be, since PS2 is pretty slow), then it's probably better. That, and the internal hard drive feature seems pretty cool. If I were looking to get a system today, and I wasn't used to any particular controller, I think I'd have a hard time getting PS2, instead of XBox.
I can vouch for the XBOX but as jwins said wait for the holiday season and the price will be going down.

Of course you don't need to purchase a memory stick for the XBOX and with the Harddrive in the XBOX you can even modify it (modchip) and make better use of the existing drive or buy a large one for massive storage.
The Xbox can use a LAN for multiplayer purposes and the PS2 uses a link cable so there is much less versatility there.
Graphics on the XBOX are clearly ahead of the PS2 with the better video card built in
Finally the XBOX is going for $100 and the PS2 is at $150.
Clearly the XBOX would be the better choice statistically, having faster load times, better graphics, better multiplayer capabilities, and more options for modification gurus, but you also need to consider your audience. The XBOX is more geared toward an older crowd, that being later high school and up. The PS2 is more geared towards teenagers of middle school through high school.

Also, XBox sucks and so does everybody who uses one.
My XBOX has a 120 GB HD, I have over 20 XBOX games on the HD, all N64, SNES, NES, Sega Genesis, Sega Master System, and Gameboy Advance games ever made. To add to that I have a media player that can play files via my computer like Winamp, and I can get the local weather along with news and stock tickers via my XBOX. I also have a program called XBOX FTP that can transfer files via ethernet between XBOXs as well
I beg to differ with your previous statement :)
