ACC Basketball Discussion

...while duke underachieves and unc rescues the conference reputation annually with their dominance.

So you're from that same camp that says college sports started in 2006 aren't you?

...and on another note, if Final Fours were the sole marker by which success is measured in NCAA basketball, we might as well not even talk about OU, Penn State, Virginia Tech and the likes in football because they're just posers who haven't made their presence felt in the postseason...

HOWEVER, let's use your measurement of success and see how it plays out...

Finals Fours (Since 1990):
ACC: 20 [UNC - 9, Duke - 7]
Big East: 7 [UConn - 3, Syracuse - 2, Georgetown - 1, Villanova - 1]

The Big Ten, Big XII, and even the SEC have had more Final Four appearances since 1990 with 14, 9, and 12 respectively...and EVEN if you wanted to go back further to the 80's where the Big East had it's BEST years the Big East still only has 15 to the ACC's 28.

...and that's JUST Final Fours...

I don't know exactly where to go to find the Sweet Sixteen or better numbers but they'd be just as ugly...I'd say that that makes the ACC "one great entity". So the statement still stands...over the longest period of time the ACC is the purest of dominant conferences from top (Duke, UNC, Maryland) to bottom. I will say one thing though...to kind of get us back on topic, in my research I've found that the Big Ten is definitely up there in the top of the pack...and even better they've done it with a variety of teams...

So I'll admit that I was way off when it comes to Big Ten basketball...I don't know it as well as I know football...but don't get me started on ACC basketball...I'm a Cameron Crazie first when it comes to basketball, been following Duke for YEARS...and Blue Devil basketball is the only thing that comes remotely close to Buckeye football for me...

How do you think this proves anything except that the ACC is a two-team top-heavy conference? 4 Final Fours between the other 10 teams over the last 20 years makes for a deep and dominant conference?

And you did also show that apparently the Big East had 8 Final Fours in the 80s, same as the ACC, so where you're getting this notion that it's a johnny-come-lately conference is a bit of a question mark... And they do have 3 titles since 1999 (none since 2006, whatever that year means to you), which is pretty solid.

Louisville 2005; Cincinnati 1992; Marquette 2003.

I realize Marquette and Cincy didn't join until 2005, but if you're going to examine which conferences are elite today, as evidenced by members' success since 1990, why wouldn't you count Cincy's 1992 run and Marquette's 2003 run?

Yes, I love a world where results don't matter before Glendale, AZ. :bonk:

Congratulations on making up arguments.

Where did I say that was my measurement of success?

Another metric (not one I'd use, but for discussion's sake)

77 - Marquette
84 - Georgetown
85 - Villanova
99 - UConn
03 - Syracuse
04 - UConn

82 - UNC
83 - NC State
91 - Duke
92 - Duke
93 - UNC
01 - Duke
02 - Maryland
05 - UNC
09 - UNC

I'd say both conferences are pretty deep, and the ACC has the better top squad, UNC. Duke has been elite for just over two decades, but has fallen off in the dance the last 5 years.

The ACC has a better top two, I'd argue the big east has a better lineup of heavy hitters. Both conferences are tremendous.
I will say one thing though...to kind of get us back on topic, in my research I've found that the Big Ten is definitely up there in the top of the pack...and even better they've done it with a variety of teams...

ok.

Perhaps that's why you're not willing to acknowledge another conference as elite?

So I'm wrong again...

...the Big East had the 80's the ACC had the 90's...and they've been about equal from then on...

You're right, the only reason I think the ACC is elite and the Big East isn't is because I've got a personal tie...

...that and I had absolutely no clue what I was talking about

Oh well...I tried.

The ACC was still dominant at the turn of the decade, I think I'd say the big east has surpassed them a bit since Duke's last title. Either way there's more than one way to skin a basketball.
