Academic All BIG 10: Great Job Buckeyes!!

101stAABuckeye said:
I can't wait to hear scUM fans explanations as to why OSU had 22 compared to the 17 total for scUM and NW (those academic elite institutions that they are)
I would imagine that their argument will be that it is harder to maintain a 3.0 gpa at those schools. I'm not saying that it is true, but that will be their argument.

It looks like you gotta have a real major to qualify for this recognition. So much for the allegation that all Ohio State players all take basket weaving. 20% of the team carries a 3.0 GPA. That's impressive. Damn, I wish the world could know about this. I hope the NCAA mentions it prominently when they very thoroughly praise Ohio State for their efforts at remaining at the forefront of college football in compliance.

Two general studies, one undeclared and one political science? Whew, their brains must hurt from all of the studying.

Oh, and don't forget about our tutors.

Great job Buckeyes!!

Notice, by the way, more than twice as many as Northwestern or UM, supposedly the conferences two academic powerhouses.

Yep. Just a bunch of no-hopers taking easy courses on coaching! NOT!!!
Well done Buckeyes!
I, in no way want to take away from the accomplishments of our Bucks, but I have to respond to this.
Couple of things....
1. When I was growing up, I went to a Public school in the city where I was pretty much a "C" student. My family moved to the country just before my Senior year, and all of a sudden I was an "A" student and could have been considered Honors material if they went only by one's GPA. The tougher the school is academically, the harder it would be for a player to excell. (again, if the criteria is simply GPA)
2. If the criteria were simply GPA, then you would be more likely to have a high GPA if you took easier classes such as a class on coaching.

Again, I am only responding to the quote...there are problems with the statement. I am extremely proud of our guys.

Here's a breakdown of the Big 10 football teams:

OSU 22
Indiana 17
PSU 16
MSU 13
Minny 11
Wiscy 10
NU 9
Iowa 8
scUM 8
Illinois 7
Purdue 6

Great job by everyone involved. Let's see this on the front page of the paper!!!!
Thanks ysubuck for pointing this out, I think it's important and an honor for the team. Of course there will be some idiots that will make light of this honor. It's even more important to the guys on that list since the vast majority of them won't be playing football on sundays.

Bret Blow Job is on the BN defending Scum by saying the coarses at OSU must have been Tressel football coarses and such.

He just doesn't have the balls ( unless they are in his throat ) to get on here and run his fairy mouth.

here's a nice post by vern mangold over on b-nuts.........

Dear Doug Harris, esteemed sports writer for the Dayton Daily News:

You must be on Holiday this week. Otherwise, you certainly would have followed up on the news release issued by the Big Ten concerning the All Big Ten Academic Award Winners.

My fellow Bucknuts recall your personal contempt for the academic prowess of our boys in uniform. To refresh your memory, you bashed the team, the school, the coaching staff, and the NCAA in your your article dated December 19th, 2003. (For Bucknuts fans, my response to Mr. Harris's yellow piece can still be found under Fan Favorites).

ESPN trots out, in October of this year, a worn, tired tale of academic skull duggery based upon a series of pay-to-play interviews with a veritable stew of unsavory ex-Buckeyes to gin ratings and generate a little shock value.

Like the rest of the lemmings in the so called "sports journalism" community, you gleefully jump on the anti-OSU band wagon by promoting quotations from such pillars of integrity as Marco "I didn't know that the gun was loaded" Cooper and Sammy "I am too stupid to spell my last name correctly at the top of the paper" Maldanado (sp? aw, who cares?!).

The Ohio State Football team lead the Big Ten in Academic Honors for the fall of 2004. A whopping 22 players- 21%, on the team qualified. This number is even more impressive since freshmen are not included. Factoring out the freshman produces a percentage total of 28 % or better than one out of four players. The next closest was Indiana with 17. The Furry Striped Rodents came in with 8. Of the 22, 8 are Seniors, which is a total that is second only to Penn State. The most significant fact is that 11 of the winners are Juniors- nearly three times the total number of eligible Juniors from other Big Ten teams.

The Juniors make up the core of Jim Tressel's first full recruiting year.

What is that you say, Mr. Harris- they didn't earn the awards, because they cheat, huh?

Or maybe they are walk-on ringers? 19 are scholarship athletes.

Or maybe they don't contribute on the field? 16 are letter winners.

Or maybe they are all majoring in Basketweaving or Remedial Math? The fields of study that the award winners earned their accolades in cover a broad range of majors that include Accounting, Biology and Mechanical Engineering.

Gee, no Journalism majors. Maybe Journalism is tougher than Mechanical Engineering?!

Too bad that this news release is good news for the OSU Football program. It obviously leaves you nothing to write about!

Regards,

Vern Mangold

Varsity football (EDU PAES 196.06) is graded S/U (satisfactory/unsatisfactory), meaning pass/fail, meaning it does not earn a letter grade and does not count toward a student-athlete's GPA. It is a 2-hour course that can be repeated for up to 10 hours, but it only counts as a non-graded elective and probably doesn't even go toward most football players' graduation.
