Smith not right for this offense

Defensive guys, you can go home from school early. You get it, just keep up the good work.

It's the offense...

Can anyone tell me exactly what the Buckeyes are doing on offense?

I know, not scoring.

Besides that, does anyone have a clue?

Certainly not quarterback Troy Smith, who seems about as comfortable as a cat dropped into the middle of the Westminster Dog Show. Sometimes, he tiptoes around. Other times, he runs for his life.
He continually looks left, looks right, peeks behind his shoulder.
This is not his offense.
Actually, when the Buckeyes are in the shotgun and using three receivers, it's similar to the system that backup Justin Zwick used when he was at Massillon. It's designed for a quarterback to throw the ball all over the field to several receivers, and it also gives the quarterback some freedom to change plays.
It's not a good offense for a quarterback who likes to run, and that's the quarterback whom the Buckeyes are using.
I'm not sure what should be the Buckeyes' offense. Maybe more of an option, maybe something else. Coach Jim Tressel and his staff must have several ideas for what is an athletically gifted but extremely underachieving offense.
OK, Antonio Pittman, I'm not talking about you.
The sophomore running back from Buchtel usually runs hard and runs well. He's averaging 92 yards a game, 5.0 per carry. His worst night was against Penn State, but that wasn't a disaster as he gained 58 yards in 15 carries.
Part of the problem for Pittman was Penn State stacked the line. The Nittany Lions could see that Smith's passing was erratic, that he was worried and that he was unsure what he wanted to do.
Smith was sacked five times!
This happened to a player who might be talented enough to be a Division I tailback, but Smith never seemed to know where the rush was coming from or where he should run.
The Buckeyes had only two plays gain more than 20 yards, and those came on their final drive when Smith finally completed a couple of decent passes. Then he was sacked and fumbled, ending OSU's attempt to tie the score.
OSU is 3-2. The Buckeyes dominated Iowa 31-6 in every aspect of the game three weeks ago. Their other victories have been against Miami (Ohio) and San Diego State. Neither are ranked teams.
When they lost 25-22 to Texas, fans dwelled on the pass that tight end Ryan Hamby dropped in the end zone. But that night, Tressel juggled his two quarterbacks. Then, neither was effective, both played cautiously.
That led Tressel to pick Smith, which makes sense.
The offense is still sputtering, though.
Has anyone seen Ted Ginn Jr. this year? Yes, the Ted Ginn of a year ago who was supposed to a Heisman Trophy candidate? This Ted Ginn is playing like just a track athlete still trying to transform himself into a football player.
Ginn has carried five times for seven yards. No one is fooled when he gets it on a reverse. He has caught 16 passes for an average of 12 yards per catch. He has one touchdown. His returns have been underwhelming.
Somehow, the Buckeyes have to set him loose.
Santonio Holmes is a big-time receiver, and there are times when he seems open, but he doesn't get the ball nearly enough. Smith has the arm with enough power to throw deep, but accuracy has been a problem.
Some fans might want to switch quarterbacks again, returning to Zwick.
That's not the answer, at least not yet.
You don't want to keep alternating quarterbacks.
But the offense?
Now that's where things have to change, and change this week before Michigan State comes in on Saturday.

i think smith's vision is the problem but i dont see zwick being any better so unless boeckman is doing anything impressive we are gonna have to stay with smith. i personally would like to see us run some I with the spread to mix it up and give us some new looks. our running game seems pretty solid to me but our passing game is etrocious. whats the cause of this? good question and nobody really knows for sure. some things im guessing is that by running our spread offense we are not utilizing proper routes to set plays up, our play calling is too predictable, or what im seeing as most likely is that smith is writing off his reads down the field as he sees them and as soon as he wrotes a guy off that guy could become open later. this is solely based on qb vision and decision making here. id like to say replace him but smith is still the best guy for the job. i really cant give you any reasonable solution on how to fix things. if it was me i would just start from scratch.

In the final analysis of things and incidents, it all starts with the quarterback and his decisions to move the offense. Troy made some decisions early in the game & he made decisions late in the game which eventually were not in favor of a victory. Ohio State lost the game and so we move on.

Penn State did thier homework and figured out our strategies. That is the game of football wrapped up in a nutshell. The season of 2002 could have easily been a record of 9 and 4 but the QB of that time was a criticle factor in handing the OSU a National Championship.

I have been around Ohio State Football too long. Maybe longer than I give myself credit for. I really believe that Ohio State was the better football team that saturday night. But dont try and convince any faithfull followers of JoePa and his Knittny Lions of this. The BIG10 season of 2005 is in a quandry and God only knows who will be the Victor. Penn State blew thier wad against US and Michigan will do us a Favor. The rest will be in the hands of Ohio State to secure a BIG10 championship once again.

people have lost some perspective on this season too. We chose to do something groundbreaking, and schedule an elite OOC matchup. Most years we do not have that game, and instead we squeak by Ohio :) I think we very well can win out, but since we scheduled a mighty texas team (which we played well enough to win, it just didn't happen), now the season is lost according to the pessimists. If we schedule like most teams, we probably lose only 1 game this year, and that's hardly a horrendous year.

Zwick's performance in HS is barely relevant, IMO. Recruits shine and falter without explanation. His performance in practice is what matters, and Tressel has made that decision.

Smith will never be a great QB. However, I think he can learn to be a good enough QB, and combine that with outstanding athleticism and getting Teddy Ballgame back on track.

We got so spoiled with unbelievably unreal statistics from Teddy we forgot that such statistics were way too incredible to be realistic. I think he can do better than he is doing now, but we have to expect him to be a big contributor and not superman.

I agree with what you say about Zwick and I hope he will shine when it comes time for him to perform. afterall he still has 2 years of football left at Ohio State. My contention is this: Someone has to start and someone has to sit. Its up to the Headball coach to make that decision. But like you say we as OSU fans become somewhat spoiled with some of the unreal stats from our players that we expect them to perform at that level all of the time. Sometimes our expectation levels of college football players exceeds our own realistic thinking. We all get into this unrealistic mode of thinking for some damn strange reason. Even myself will fall into this category and shame on me for this.............

I think we can expect more, definitely after the last game's ugliness. However, I think if our expectations were more realistic than seasons like this one would be acceptable, and the seasons like 2002 would be a dream come true.

true. is this team better than their 3-2 record indicates? probably. however, when the losses for this team are the product of the exact same deficiency every year, then there is a problem. i dont find it unreasonable to have expectations of improvements on offense. however that seems to be a pipe dream.

if osu wants to get teddy back on track, they need to put him in a position to succeed. that doesnt happen when he runs 5 yard out patterns and end around plays that are obvious to everyone except osu's offensive staff apparently.

The Ohio State offense has never finished higher than 8th in the Big 10 under Coach Tressel.

With the supposed talent that Ohio State attracts, this seems to be an "out of whack" stat.

The problem with this type of ultra conservative offense is that if they make one or two mistakes, then the game is all but out of reach.

If MSU goes up 14-0 on Saturday (for whatever reason) the game may be over.

It's just unrealistic to expect 100% mistake free football all the time. It seems that we have a team that is unequipped to recover from any type of offensive mistake because of the coaching philosophy.

I still say it goes back to coaching. The offense has remained steady at one thing - staying the same. The OL is talented every year, yet performs as if they were not. The QB's appear talented out of high school, yet never get any better. The RB's...well, it's hard to say. Most here were Lydell Ross haters, but he got NFL looks. Pittman hasn't been overly impressive so far (statistically, that is), but I think this goes back to the OL. The talent at WR this year is unbelievable, but nobody is getting them the ball...on the rare exception they do see it, they aren't in a position to do anything with it after the catch.

Personally, I still don't think I've seen enough this year of either Zwick or Smith to accurately judge how good they are. Yet this season is half over. That screams of coaching. I think that after five games, we should have at least a general idea of how a specific player is doing...but we don't. Smith has had a great game and a piss-poor game. Zwick hasn't seen enough time for me to tell, but he's looked good in his limited action. Why don't I know? Why is the offense so bad, especially with so much talent, that I STILL can't tell how good some of our players are?

Coaching.
