Regarding the "fear" points- I also agree. I don't think that I feared my parents, in the strict sense of the word, but I had a very strong respect for what they could do to me (spank, ground, etc.) if I did something wrong. More importantly, I had a very strong respect for them, as my parents, and as the ones "in charge".
I agree wholeheartedly. People focus so narrowly on the issue of corporal punishment that they ignore the bulk of the parent-child relationship. My dad did a lot of things that our candy-ass society would think barbaric. He would tan my hide if it was warranted. He taught me how to fight (and we're not talking Marquis of Queensbury rules, he's a non-practicing Marine (they never stop being marines, you know :))and every lesson was about maximum effect for minimum risk). All of those lessons were preceded and followed with reminders that I must NEVER start a fight, only finish it. I never feared my parents, because in their every action (including the spankings) they made it clear that they loved me.
OK. enough verbosity.
I'm out.
