If convicted of the felonious assault and aggravated assault charges, the second-team All-American could face up to four years in prison and a $2,000 fine. A police report said a 26-year-old man accused Jackson of striking him with a bottle in the right eye June 1. Jackson was selected the preseason defensive player of the year in the Big Ten.

Kelly Baraka, who sat out his freshman season with Michigan after being arrested for marijuana possession, was dismissed from the football team for undisclosed reasons. Baraka, considered one of the nation's best high school football players, never played a down for the Wolverines after being arrested in May and July. He spent four days in jail in August after pleading guilty to the charges. He was expected to have a major role with the team this season. ``It is with great disappointment that I have dismissed Kelly Baraka from the Michigan football team,'' coach Lloyd Carr said in a statement released Wednesday.

A University of Michigan football player was arrested Thursday in a prostitution sting operation in Ypsilanti Township. Jeremy LeSueur, a 21-year old Kinesiology junior, was arrested Thursday evening for accosting and soliciting a prostitute, a misdemeanor crime in Michigan. The offense is punishable by up to 90 days in jail and a $500 fine. LeSueur has been suspended from the football team, but head coach Lloyd Carr would not comment why, The Associated Press reported.

Michigan running back B.J. Askew is scheduled to stand trial next month on a domestic assault and battery charge following a dispute with his girlfriend. Askew, 21, has been accused in the assault earlier this month on his live-in girlfriend in their apartment. Pittsfield Township police were called to the complex by Askew, who told police he and the woman were involved in a dispute. The woman, 20, told police she and Askew were arguing, then he threw some of her clothes into the hallway, carried her to the door and threw her out of the apartment. Domestic assault is a misdemeanor punishable by up to 93 days in jail.

Authorities said Howard lost control of his sport utility vehicle on July 27, swerved into an oncoming lane and struck a car driven by Mary Casey. Casey's vehicle was a total loss, and she was in critical condition for several weeks. Howard, who was not injured in the accident, completed his Michigan career this season.

Former Michigan captain James Whitley, kicked off the team after his arrest on a gun charge, has pleaded guilty in a deal that spares him any jail time. The defensive back pleaded guilty Thursday to one count of carrying a concealed weapon. Prosecutors agreed that Whitley will not receive any jail time and will get no more than a year's probation when he is sentenced May 3, The Ann Arbor News reported. The charge carries a possible five-year prison sentence. Whitley was the Wolverines' co-captain on Dec. 14 when he went with then-teammate David Terrell to Terrell's ex-girlfriend's Ann Arbor apartment. Terrell told police he asked Whitley to go with him because he believed the 19-year-old woman was having trouble with her new boyfriend. The woman called police, who found a loaded handgun in Whitley's pocket and arrested him. Coach Lloyd Carr kicked Whitley off the team, denying him a chance to play in the Citrus Bowl on Jan. 1.

Two Michigan football players charged in a fight at a campus-area coffee shop pleaded no contest Tuesday to a misdemeanor charge of disturbing the peace. Cato June and Larry Stevens will be sentenced April 19, and both likely will qualify for a deferred sentencing program. Disturbing the peace is a misdemeanor punishable by up to 90 days in jail and a $100 fine. A no contest plea is not an admission of guilt, but is treated as such for sentencing purposes. Both men were taken into custody by Ann Arbor police shortly after 1 a.m. on March 18. Stevens had been charged with disorderly fighting, while June faced a charge of failing to obey an officer's order. Police said an officer saw a man, later identified as Stevens, punch another man in the face. As officers were ordering people to leave, June refused, saying that he was searching for a championship ring, police told The Ann Arbor News.

Head football coach Gary Moeller resigned May 4 after being charged with disorderly conduct and punching a police officer in a Southfield, Mich., restaurant. A day earlier, ESPN obtained tapes of Moeller's drunken outbursts during the April 28 incident and broadcasted segments over radios and televisions across the country. At almost any other institution, Moeller's behavior would have set the football program back five years. Imagine if Gophers football coach Jim Wacker waltzed into a local Champps one night, sucked down 12 Windsors, sent his wife Lil to the car and proceeded to harass other women for not dancing with him. Then, after the cops arrive, picture Wacker taking a swing at one and screaming with incoherence and profanity. ``He is really a good person,'' Wacker said. ``He's a good coach, and he made a terrible mistake. And what a price. You just feel for him.''

He is not suspected of involvement in the armed robbery. Baraka posted $100 bond following his July 31 arrest.

Two Michigan football players and an ex-player were being investigated Wednesday in connection the theft of several thousand dollars worth of merchandise from a Kmart store. Offensive linemen Jonathan Goodwin and Maurice Williams, both 20, and former fullback Demetrius Smith, 19, were being investigated as being part of a six-person embezzlement ring, according to 14th District Court documents. The investigation began June 23 when a loss control manager for Kmart contacted the sheriff's department. Three men and two women, with help from a female cashier, allegedly took thousands of dollars worth of merchandise through a checkout lane at the Kmart store in Ypsilanti Township earlier this month. The employee, Sweetana Cummings, told investigators the embezzlements were arranged with the other five, who posed as customers. Cummings said she failed to charge them for merchandise processed at her register, according to court records. Investigators searched an apartment in Pittsfield Township where Goodwin and Williams live and recovered 52 items valued at more than $3,000, including telephones, furniture, video tapes and toilet paper. Investigators said they also expected to find more than $3,000 worth of merchandise at three other locations. The allegations are the latest in a string of problems for Michigan's football team. Smith pleaded guilty on June 8 to forging a check and has been suspended from the team pending a resolution to the case. At least four other players have been suspended following fights, sexual assault convictions and marijuana possession charges. Another sat out six games last fall for accepting extra benefits in violation of NCAA rules.
