A desperate cry for help?

will it break the tie? Because if you go back 50 years after this game...you are also dropping the game in 1955...in which Ohio State won 17-0. So when we win tomorrow...the last 50 years will still be 24-24-2

of course it breaks the tie! let's imagine that ohio state plays michigan two times in one season, and then both teams meet in a bowl game. yes, it will never happen, but this is just a hypothetical consideration. ohio state wins the first but does not win the second. now the two schools play a bowl game for a tiebreaker. unsurprisingly, ohio state wins the tiebreaker. according to you, however, ohio state would not have won the tiebreaker because ohio state did not win the second game.

Anyway, this guy's relative idiocy notwithstanding, the brainless mob mentality that becomes so pervasive this time of year has always bugged me. I attended Ohio State, I graduated, I was there for every home game of the 2002 season, and I left every single one with raised blood pressure and no voice. I don't own a single article of clothing that indicates any of that, and I don't respond to "O-H...I-O" cheers. Frankly, at the Mirror Lake rally last night, I was itching to scream "Go Blue," just to see the reaction--but I valued my 'junk' far too much to do so. I don't know. I sort of see where this guy is coming from, even if he is copping a bitchy little girl 'tude about it. I don't feel like I'm any less of a fan by not participating in the abject hatred of all things Michigan. It's amusing - the constant barrage of shit we propel at them - but many people really do harbor deep-seeded serious beefs, and I find that disconcerting. Wait, is it 'beeves'? Whatever. I love Ohio State and always will, but Michigan to me is just another date on the schedule. The rivalry, as far as I'm concerned, is something fans and the media have created to punctuate the end of the season. Taking it any more seriously than that flirts with chauvinism, and I have never felt that the games these guys play should be more important to the fans than it is to them. Call me crazy.

I believe he was getting at this point: Before the bowl game, someone could say that the series is tied over the last two games and that OSU is looking to break that tie. However, once they win the bowl game, the series is still tied over the last two games.

Right now, the series is tied over the last 50 years (1955-2004). When OSU wins, they will be 25-24-2 over the last 51 years (1955-2005), not over the last 50 years. Over the last 50 years (1956-2005), they will still be 24-24-2.
bucky, i got what he typed. i think he was pretty clear. just in the case of wins and losses, then no tie is ever broken if the first and second games are split, as well as if the tiebreaker is won by the team that won the first game. yes, if you think about it one way, a new series, which then needs a tiebreaker, is formed. if you think about it another way, the next game is a tiebreaker nonetheless.

when ohio state wins, you better believe that i'll claim that ohio state has won the tiebreaker from the series of the last fifty years and, therefore, holds the edge.

OK, I thought you had misread what he said. I just can't stay out of silly arguments. Bad habit, I suppose.

Although I personally think this jack ass is a moron, rivalries have always held different meanings for different people. Some people are much more intense than others because of past experiences and some people are just inherently less intense. So it may a bit unfair to jump down his throat for his personal opinion.

That being said, it is clear that the author has little grasp of the history behind the Ohio State Michigan rivalry. Yes, as time has passed, the appearance of an intensified hatred has emerged, but our society has also changed. People are much more outspoken in their words and clothes (Fuck Michigan t-shirts) and also we live in a globally accessible world. It's much easlier to air one's feelings now a days, than it was even 10 years ago, let alone 20/30 or more. People back then hated scUM just as much as we do now, it just wasn't as well covered in the media.

I hate when people think they are cool for being anti- this or that. Obviously this guy is a douchebag looking for attention. Also mods if you think this belongs on the main board go ahead and move it.

Rivalry too overhyped

For the same reason why it praises this week, I hate it. This week shows how we students have a ridiculous perspective on the entire game and the rivalry.

There are some positive aspects to Michigan week. Various philanthropic events try to balance out the prevalent misanthropic attitude towards Michigan. However, enthusiasm for victory often works against the few positives of the week. In the annual Ohio State-Michigan Blood Battle for the Red Cross, there is the superstition that the winner of the blood battle loses the game. For some winning the game trumps helping a good cause.

The shirts worn this week are tacky at best and reprehensible at worst. The staple, "Fuck Michigan" shirt is tactless, although better than the similar "Muck Fichigan" model. If you go out of your way to dress vulgarly and look like an ass, do not try feign being coy and polite about it. There is also the "Ann Arbor is a Whore" shirt. All our favorite shirts derogatory to Michigan have a strong misogynistic overtone, In the future, I imagine they will get even more outlandish. Someone should start a "Let\'s Anally Rape the Wolverines" line of shirts. Then at least he or she can profit from the insanity.

The entire rivalry with Michigan has become incredibly juvenile on our parts. Michigan has a hefty lead in the overall record, 57-38-6. To tie it up OSU needs to win every game until 2023. The bitterness of this rivalry on our side seems mostly due to jealousy. In an entire litany of ways, Michigan could be viewed as a superior school, in football and academics. While loyal to OSU, it still strikes me as odd how we villianize a school of comparable quality to our own from apparent envy.

The rivalry has become a problem for Ohio State due to several reasons. First, the school administration puts too much of an emphasis on this game. Whenever guests come to give large talks, like the author of Freakanomics this Monday, they are strongly encouraged, perhaps coerced, into pandering to the football fanatics. It is shallow, forced gesture and it detracts from academic programming. Likewise, university Web sites, like the one mentioned above, declare this as the best week of the year. Why any academic institution willingly subordinates itself to one of its extracurriculars, regardless of the money it rakes in, escapes me.

The great majority of the blame falls on every student and alumnus. The primary goal here is education, not sports. Everyone needs to remember that. The Michigan game is just a game. It is something that we can all enjoy, but only if we treat it with a certain degree of levity. Instead, we turn wholesome school pride into raging jingoism. Periodically, it flies right back in our face, in the form of burnt cars and depreciated degrees.

Good rivalries thrive on begrudgingly mutual respect, not slanders and idiocy. Michigan\'s athletes work hard just like our own team, and Michigan students do the same things that we do. Certainly, we want to best them, and we should. Our athletes should outclass them on the field, and more importantly, we fans should outclass Michigan students off the field. We want to give this rivalry renown, not notoriety. So cheer as loudly as you can for our guys, and feel free to harangue our worthy opponents. Just make sure to do it sportingly.
