9-Game Big Ten Schedules - Good or bad for tOSU?

Conference neutral site games are fucking stupid. Either go to 10 conference games to have 5-home and 5-away conference games, or just have the teams suck it up when their 4-home 5-away conference schedule happens every other year under a 9-game schedule (which of course would be offset by a 5-home 4-away conference schedule the opposite years). Two OOC games should be sufficient preparation for conference play.

Agreed. I could live with a 1- or 2-year thing (though I wouldn't like it), but I don't want to see the Big Ten try to recreate the RRS or the WLOCP, or any other rivalry that is traditionally in a neutral location. I could see Ohio State-Penn State played in Pittsburgh or Cleveland for a year, or Ohio State-Illinois in Indianapolis (though that is a HUGE stretch to me). Maybe Wisconsin-Northwestern in Milwaukee (if they can convert that stadium to football, that is). But I think those should all be agreed-upon decisions made independently by the teams involved, and approved by the Big Ten - not mandated by the Big Ten.

I'd prefer 4 home, 4 away games. If they are set on increasing conference games, go to 5 and 5. If 10 is too many, go to 4/5 and 5/4. But don't go to 4 and 4, with 1 neutral site.

I'm not arguing the tradition/fan side, but from the business side, it does make some sense. Financially, there would probably be enough revenue from a neutral site game (and there's no reason to keep it the same, you can switch it up every two years to keep up the interest) that the split would equal or exceed the revenue the "home" team would get under a 5/4 season, and would boost the revenue a team with a 4/5 season would have had. If they don't want to go to a 10 game season yet (and I think they will, 9 will just be a stepping stone if they don't go straight to 10), it makes a lot of sense.

Like I said, as a fan I'm really not in favor of making it a "regular" thing, but I can see the financial upside which I'm sure the ADs are probably weighing. If we've learned anything about our AD and conference, its that they will sacrifice tradition for large financial gains.

On the FCS thing, let's hope it starts in 2015 or at least excepts the scUM/AppSt. game.

I wonder what the plan would be for neutral sites? I wouldn't be shocked if they tried to use the Super Bowl site list to try to grow the B1G. Of course it would only matter if you have an OSU, scUM, or the Cult in the game. Otherwise a game in Miami would look like any other Hurricanes game. I have a feeling Rutgers will be playing most of their big games at Yankee stadium or the Meadowlands anyway.

If they go to 9 B1G games just stick with the 4/5 model and teams would need to make sure that they schedule all 3 or at least 2 of the OOC games at home to make up for it. In OSU's case 4 home B1G game years would mean all 3 OOC games would need to be at home and in 5 game years they could play 1 OOC game away. Just make sure the away B1G games are spread out evenly i.e. OSU wouldn't have to play at scUM, Wiscy, Nebraska, and PSU in one year. Limit of 2 top tier away games a year.

Relevant to post here because it deals with B1G scheduling.

Coach Alvarez said all B1G AD's have agreed to eliminate FCS teams on the schedule. Not sure when this policy will be implemented.

It's odd that Alvarez is leading the charge on this, considering the fact that he's been the AD at UW for years and for years UW has been scheduling nothing but lightweights OOC.

You don't have to go FCS to schedule cupcakes. Not that they haven't been.

Probably just the mouthpiece for a decision that was handed down.

Alvarez also basically admitted that they realize HDTV is taking fans away and the Big Ten needs to up the ante.

"Taking fans away".

Translation: They can't keep playing crap teams (UW included) and going to the same in crappy locations and assume people will show up.

You mean, like Utah State? :sneaky:

That was just plain bad luck on the part of UW. You can bet that when that game was scheduled, Alvarez thought he'd be getting another one of these Utah State teams:

1998: 3-8
1999: 4-7
2000: 5-6
2001: 4-7
2002: 4-7
2003: 3-9
2004: 3-8
2005: 3-8
2006: 1-11
2007: 2-10
2008: 3-9
2009: 4-8
2010: 4-8
2011: 7-6

Wow, did I really have to specify B1G?

No of course not. Given your history of magnanimity towards taking posts in the spirit of what was meant rather than the exact letter of what was wri...

Damnit! I tried so hard to say that with a straight face too!

In all seriousness I don't see any reason to paint too broad of a brush on the issue. Northwestern playing in Wrigley is a pretty cool set up. I see more games along those lines than anything and I don't think we need to worry about Ohio State vs TSUN in Browns Stadium happening anytime soon.
