9-Game Big Ten Schedules - Good or bad for tOSU?

Just looking at the math on this real quick;

If you could manage to ensure 3 home OOC games on the years with only 4 conference home games it wouldn't be that big a deal.

Just for ease of math lets say a home game is worth 1Million and road OOC games are worth 250K (road B10 games don't matter, you have no control anyway).

4 B1G home games + 3 OOC home game year = 7MM
5 B1G home games + 2 OOC home + 1 OOC road = 7.25 MM
No matter the real numbers you are looking at about a 3.5% difference in gross revenues.

The bitch would be if your OOC obligations cost you a home game in a 4 B1G games year. = 6.25 MM or about an 10% haircut.

So forgetting all the ancillary money for vendors and the community and just going by what OSU brings in for a home game it's really not that big a difference IF you can manage the 3 OOC games in a 4 at home year.

Of course where I went to school the current set up of frequently having 4 conference and 4 OOC at home = 8MM and voluntarily giving that away seems kind of fucking dumb but I digress.

Best case: 5 Home B1G + 3 Home OOC = 8MM
Worst case: 4 Home B1G + 2 home OOC + 1 road OOC = 6.25MM

That's an average of 7.125 MM a year same as in my above scenario. Once they committed to the 9 game B1G schedule its all the same (in the narrow focus of gate receipts or whatever measurement they use for home game revenue.)

In my IMO this will make more sense when the 16-team superconferences and a playoff materialize.

Ok, but I think you brought up that the BTN would have more control over the games, when it comes to the in-conference games. So that's more games to control. Will that control be worth $10M every other year?

Reasons to not like it
3. Divisional races will be unbalanced, with 3 teams having 5 games and the other 3 teams having 4. In odd-numbered years, tOSU and these teams will have 5 conference home games (Iowa, Sparty, and Nebraska from the Legends, and Illinois and Indiana from the Leaders)

Why is it done this way? They should make it so everyone in one division has an extra home game one year with the other division's teams playing an extra road game. Then switch every year. Everyone within a division having the same number of home conference games would make the divisional races more fair. Just seems like common sense.

Not being eligible for a bowl game because you chose to play two 1AA opponents OOC hurts your perception (ASU). Losing by 17, at home, to Washington State hurts your perception (Or St.). Losing an OOC game to a mid-major (Or St...twice and Cal). Losing three straight, at home, to end the season, with one of those being a blowout at the hands of your rival, hurts your perception (Cal).

I also think to many teams make bowl games now. Making a bowl game should mean your good. I would add that you have to be atleast .500 in your league play, along with a winning record overall to qualify.

But, I'm old and remember walking to school 10 miles every day, up hill in 5 feet of snow.

Seriously though, I know the Pac12 is weak but they have a point(and are a good reminder of the cyclical nature of conference power...they used to be very good).

If we were in the SEC, or when the B1G gets back to being good that extra tough ass conference game is not really a joyous thing to anyone except the guys selling advertisement space for the network.

Get ready for 9- or 10-game league schedule

Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany issued a statement to the Big Ten Network on Tuesday saying the league will look into a nine- and 10-game league schedule in the future.

Here's the release:

"After meeting with coaches and athletic directors, the Big Ten will look at nine- and 10-game options for future conference football schedules. As a conference we want to play each other more, not less, and an increase in the number of games will help accomplish that goal. The Big Ten will continue meeting with school representatives in the coming months to present a proposal to the Council of Presidents/Chancellors in June."​

This doesn't come as a surprise, as expanding the number of conference games from eight to nine or 10 has been discussed in the past. With a move toward a 14-team league in 2014, with the additions of Maryland and Rutgers, the speculation that the Big Ten would increase conference games increased. Now, it may end up being a reality.

The pitfall of playing nine league games is the fact in some years, schools will have five conference home games and four away, while others will have the opposite scenario. That's not a fair and equitable model, allowing an advantage to some teams in certain years and a disadvantage to others.

And with a 9-game league schedule, the talk about one major (rivalry?) neutral site game makes more sense and seems a lot more likely. Evens the slate at 4 home games per team, with both getting a cut of the neutral site games.

Not saying I'm a fan, but it makes sense and evens the board.
