Game Thread #7 tOSU 18, Purdue 26 (Oct 17, Noon ET, BTN)

Reminds me a lot of the '07 Illinois game.

A shellshocked QB, plenty of mistakes, an excellent defense that just couldn't quite do the job today and a bad call/non-call on a fumble that changed momentum and resulted in points for the other team.

That '07 Illinois team went to the Rose Bowl. This Purdue team won't even go to Detroit.

At the start of the season, LJB posted a very well written summary of this team and their outlook for the year.

As I recall, LJB called it a three loss year. He was particularly concerned about the lack of experience on offense. He later wrote that he had changed his mind, but I think he was right.

My greatest concern is the quarterback. If your QB is not confident, if he is easily rattled, then everything comes undone on offense. Linemen playing making mistakes early in a game, make even more mistakes.

You don't win games with this many turnovers. The silly interceptions and fumbles. How many penalties for early movement on first downs?

This week, sitting in that locker room right now, this team knows that it cannot blame the flu. It must blame itself for losing to a team that had far less talent than they do.

They can react by mailing it in for the rest of the season. A BCS bowl is now certainly gone.

Wait, or is it? Doesn't this team still control its own destiny? Winning out still puts them in a BCS bowl. The NC pressure is off. And so are any Heisman thoughts Pryor supporters might have begun the season with.

I'm betting that the Buckeyes still have some pretty good football in them. What remains to be seen is whether they will draw together as a team and play it, on both sides of the ball.

I agree with you but, could someone PLEASE do away with this combination of 4 words? Replace it with something like "Get ur Done" or other unique phrases?

Reminds me a lot of the Cooper era.

I had said earlier in the thread if the Buckeyes win out, they go to the Rose Bowl. That's not quite true.

Iowa is the only team still undefeated in league play. Sparty still only has one league loss though and they're the only team in that race that the Bucks don't play or haven't already beaten, so that could conceivably come down to a tiebreaker.

I'm sure this will eventually get its own thread, but the point is that there is still plenty to root for this season.

One bright spot, as horrible as we played we still had a chance to come back at the end there. Lots of mental mistakes in this game, plenty of blame to go all around for this one from the top to the bottom. Couple bad calls but let's be honest, we should have dominated and easily won.

Congrats to Purdue and Purdue fan, nice game, good game plan, you won you deserve your kudos.

Well, I'm off to go cut off Mark May's penis now which I'm sure will be like finding a needle in a lard sack, wish me luck.

Beat M*ch*g*n, go to the Rose Bowl and win that, and nobody will remember this debacle.

I'd be encouraged to get to Pasadena because that would mean our team improved dramatically from today's performance. The schedule gets tougher in November, so if we win out we will have improved a lot.

A little tough to think that is going to happen at the moment, though. The offensive struggles didn't just start today. Time will tell.

In other news Texas and Oklahoma are looking like complete trash. Lots of turnovers and penalties.

As much as I want us to win every game and go to the NC/BCS bowls. A year like this might be good for humbling the fans. Maybe it will get rid of all the bandwagon fans and those bringing the constant negative attitude to the forums. Regardless, I couldn't be happier to be a Buckeye's fan. I've never lived a day in Ohio(aside from going to a game last year) and I still love this team and everything it embodies. :oh:

:( Damn, the loss hurts mainly because the potential for the offense is there but they haven't put it together yet... not confident but still hopeful they'll be able to string together some great games in November.

The defense brought their B game but when they have been on the field for the equivalent of ~6 quarters in 2 games there will be drives when they can't get out of their own way. Still played a good enough game that would have won the game if the offense was half way on track like the 4th quarter.

As I type that I am reminded that even on their bad days it's still infinitely better to be a Buckeye fan than a scUM fan on their best days.
