#7 Georgetown 70, #2 Ohio State 52 - NCAA Tournament (Final)

Well, I am still disappointed even if the team did exceed every expectation I had.

There is truth in the comment about the 3's not falling. If you watched our last five games rating in the Pomeroy ratings, we fell from #5 to below #40 during that last ten games. Whether it was tiredness from playing with so few reliable substitutes, the NCAA issues, Matta's supposed leap for Indiana if the NCAA didn't go our way, or just a natural occurence of gravitation toward the mean, I have never seen a team go from super-hot shooters to what we saw in recent games.

But, you know what, I don't care. They did better than I thought they would this year. They represented Ohio State in a way we can all be proud of and they played their hearts out.

As far as I'm concerned, these guys deserve a lot of respect from Buckeye fans for their heart, courage, and values and I rank them as one of our best teams in a long time. Well done, guys, you have nothing to hang your heads about.

A few thoughts (some of which might have been already said, but I don't have the patience to read through the 15 new pages of a game that makes me sick):

1) A huge period of the game was when there were just under 10 minutes to play. We had the ball three straight times down 9 points, and we had two turnovers and one missed three which Gtown promptly rebounded. At that point, I knew we weren't going to win b/c time was running out and sooner or later Gtown was going to score again. We squandered three chances right there when we could have put ourselves back into the game.

2) Gtown is a really good team. I'm not going to whine about how we got screwed by their being a #7 seed that we had to play in the second round b/c IMO it's pathetic and childish to do so. I've just got to give them credit. They are a very fundamentally sound team -- to the best of my recollection, they only missed one foul shot, they shot the ball well from the field, they rebounded the ball well, and they made very few turnovers, which is not only critical, but also very difficult when you run a Princeton-style offense in which you hold the ball, passing it and dribbling it for 30+ seconds per possession.

3) We had a great season, but we overachieved. It was obvious to any impartial observer that Gtown was the better team on the floor yesterday. IMO if we play them 10 times, they'd probably win 7 or 8. And that's no cut against our guys, it's simply a recognition that Gtown is very, very good; and it's a credit to our guys to the fact that they had a spectacular year even though we might not have had the best talent. I'm proud of this team.

4) This is petty, but I didn't like the three pointer that Gtown shot with 5 seconds to go. When you're up 15, you just take the shot clock violation and give us the ball back. I thought that was highly unnecessary and somewhat tarnished any good feelings I had toward John Thompson III and Gtown.

5) I'm wondering if the fact that we didn't play well toward the end of the season is in part attributable to Matta. As I've said multiple times, it was almost as if there wasn't much of a game plan at the end of the season, and yesterday was another example. On offense, with the exception of Dials who was quite active by setting screens and posting up, we just seemed to be content throwing the ball around the perimeter with no real movement by players without the ball. Gtown, on the other hand, had a real game plan, flashing guys into the high post who were looking to shoot if open or pass to the open man in the low post or on the baseline if the defense crashed. Maybe I'm being too hard on Matta, but it seems that going into a game in which the opposing team's front line goes 7'2", 6'9" and 6'9", we should've had a better game plan as to how to score; instead, it seemed like we just did the same things that haven't been working for the last 7 games.

I don't think expections were "very low"...in fact, many thought we had a decent chance at winning 20 games again this year despite the reduction in the number of games.

Good point, after winning 20 games last season, I fully expected to do so again this year, even though, as you say, we played fewer games. And I expected to make the tournament (indeed, I thought we would have last year but for the self-imposed ban).

Did Dials just run out of gas at the end of the year? Because from what I saw the last 2 weeks, he looked rather soft and nothing like an MVP candidate. Except the second half against Davidson - but who cares if you look great against them?

Agree, but I'd qualify that statement by noting that Georgetown, going 7'2", 6'9", 6'9" had a lot to do with making it look like OSU didn't have a gameplan. Everybody knew size was going to be an issue, so its difficult for me to be disappointed in the Buckeyes losing a game that I fully expected they would lose when I saw the potential match-up a week ago.

I was actually impressed that they always clawed their way back into the game and didn't give up, even though it appeared (to me at least) that it was a lost cause with 10:00 to go in the 1st, despite Foster's threes suddenly finding net. Hibbert was simply too much.

I echo osugrad 21's opinion that the best days are ahead. When the timing is better, I will make a favorable comparison of next year's team to the Xavier team that Thad took to the elite 8 (2 point guards who can also shoot, nba-caliber shooting guard, All American/POY big man).

That is persistence and being resilient, nothing to do with courage.

Wouldn't persistence and resiliency be natural results of, or motivated by, courage?

honestly, not only dials but the team as a whole. 10 scholarship athletes, two of whome didnt play at all.

foster 33.8
butler 33.3
dials 30.4
sullinger 29.0
lewis 25.4
sylvester 24.5
harris/twig 9.something

basically rode 6 players.

the teams shortcommings all season came back in the end. not a suprise out rebounded by 15. gtown had 12 offensive two our 2. butler matched his season high in turnovers (4 not a huge number but when he turns the ball over we struggle.)

i personally dont think dials got used and abused like some are saying (not necessarily on her but in general) as a team they out rebounded, out checked out. bad coaching, no not really. sullinger isnt going to win many battles under the hoop. the team is better off with him comming in and attacking the ball rather than fighting for it underneath.

the other thing i take away, well already knew, and more than once have argued is you cant coach size. guys like roe, gates make things very difficult to match up with. gtown had big wings who really were difference makers. this team had thier 6 guys who are small. 4 of them 6-4 or smaller and a 6-7 guy who is a wing. along with dials.

i think it will be more than interesting to see the change in the teams style over the next 2-3 years...
