the thing is if the game is called tight and done so in a consistent manner. the game will adjust. not even over years, seasons, months. if called consistently it will adjust by the under 16 time out.

it used to be the tournament was a rugged thing, beatings, hackings, hangings etc. this year not so much...

Maybe a lot of fouls were being called because the players were committing a lot of fouls? Wow, what an amazing concept.

Why should the refs change because the players on the floor cant follow simple rules? As long as it's consistent for both teams...

Good points, isn't basketball supposed to be a "non-contact" sport?

You make good points, but can you honestly say that it was consistent?

Well, for the OSU games it seemed so, but I can't comment on the tournament as a whole.
I didn't see anything consistent about the fouls called against & for Oden on monday night. He got away with quite a bit in the second half, while UF was whistled for simple arm checks.

In earlier games, players were allowed to hang all over Greg, while ticky tack fouls sent him to the bench. He was not blameless in his foul trouble, but there was a definite lack of consistency.

Here's a new one. It is only human nature that if you put 12 guys in a room and show them a basketball game all of them will see it differently. Okay, maybe 2 will agree on some things. It probably doesn't matter how many fouls are allowed they still will be seen differently. In addition, if you ever started allowing more fouls the game might never end or the best free-throw shooting team in the nation will be the National Champions.

I also thought that they were being a little kind to Oden in the last game.

In terms of consistency, I can tell you that Conley was not the only one that made contact with his hands 40 ft from the basket, but he was called for it...It changed the complexion of the game when Conley got his second foul early in the game, and that was due mainly to him picking up a foul for something that has happened all tournament and I bet wasnt called 5 times all tournament...

Two rule changes I've wanted for years:

Go to a 30-second shot clock, and eliminate the 5-second rule.

I think 6 fouls would make the game more of a hack-fest, and that 3 refs are enough.

One other pet peeve - get the coaches off of the damn court!

BB73, I guess your history expertise is in college football. I was reminded by a sportswriter (didn't catch his name) on the radio today that the Big East tried 6 fouls and was surprised that nobody had mentioned here that it has been tried and failed. In case anyone is interested, yes indeedy do it did turn into a "hack-fest." The writer mentioned he was covering the league at the time and said it was the worst basketball he had ever seen... total thug ball.

I think your comments about the 5 second rule are spot on and the switch to 30 seconds would do nothing but enhance the game. As long as I've been watching basketball, I've been bitching about the refs. I measure a ref's worth by how much I notice him during a game. Tom Rucker (retired thank god), Ed Hightower, and Ted Valentine are names I wish I never knew. Rucker was just plain awful his last few years, but Valentine and Hightower seem to have it in for the Bucks. Not that it had anything to do with Monday's game, I just like to bad mouth those clowns every chance I get. Anyways, i don't think we'll ever be totally satisfied with the refs and in a close game the losing side can always find a few calls/no calls that could have made the difference. Of course, that doesn't mean they shouldn't try to make it better/more consistent.

And yes, GET THE COACHES OFF THE DAMNED COURT. I wish they would enforce the rules and T anyone up that steps out of the box, Matta included. Speaking of technicals, (and I know it's been mentioned elsewhere) but how does Oden keep from getting T'd up on his dunks? I love to watch it, but seriously, if I were the opposing coach, I'd be chewing the ref's ear off about it.

The only problem with eliminating foul limits, even if you are allowed to use your best free throw shooter, is that it would increase the number of fouls per game immensely.

Why would you let a guy get a three point shot, when you can foul him and make him make 3 free throws in a row all of the time? If you have a Greg Oden in the paint, who can take out virtually any shot if he doesn't have to worry about fouling, it would be very hard to get a field goal in, and almost impossible to even it out by making all of those free throws.

I do like the concept though, but it still needs some altering.

Interesting, but I still don't understand why a team is just going to give up all the shots at the line...I can see a little bit of the hack when guys go for layups, b/c the guys have the extra foul to give, but you can always get that with guys on the bench now, much like Florida did to us when they rotated 4 big guys and all gave up most of their fouls...You will also get the same thing you get with the Miami heat in the NBA when teams pull the hack a shaq, but b4 long your team is over the limit and a foul out top that would of been no harm at all and now a good free throw shooter is going to the line for 2 easy points...

I agree here with BB73's thought of making the 30 second shot clock, I think it would add more flow to the game and allow the refs to not pay attention to having to count all the time...

Also agree about judging an official, by the lack of really knowing that they are effecting the game...

It has became a game of where the coaches keep inching and inching farther out b/c they know they are not going to get called for it...I am all for a no tolerance policy about yelling and screaming about a call just like they brought into the NBA this year...Just be harsh about it at the beginning of the season and the coaches will get the hint, but this is another situation where the refs would need to understand the situation and if there is a questionable call with 10 seconds left and the game is still in doubt, don't T the coach up then and put the game away on tech call over a questionable call...

Because sooner or later, free throws will be missed, no matter who's shooting, so there would never be any reason to let anyone drive to the hoop without violence conducted upon their person. The only reason big guys don't already indiscrimately hack the arm of anyone attempting a shot within 5 feet of the rim is because they'll foul out.
A simple solution to this is to call all intentional fouls as intentional fouls. If it's clear someone is trying merely to foul and not to play bball, the opponent shoots 2 and gets possession back. Of course this would really shorten the last 1 or 2 minutes of a close game, so maybe it's not the way to go, if you like big comebacks.
