Columbus, OH – Five Ohio State men's lacrosse players received postseason honors from the Great Western Lacrosse League, the conference announced Thursday. Joel Dalgarno was named the GWLL Newcomer of the Year, while Kevin Buchanan, Ricky Pages and Brian Yontz were first team all-league selections and Andrew Bender was a second-team choice.
Freshman attackman Dalgarno, from Coquitlam, British Columbia, shared the Buckeye lead in points with 41 and had 24 goals and 17 assists to rank second on the squad. A starter in all 13 contests, he had at least one point in every game on the year and at least two points in all but one outing. Dalgarno ranked third (tied) in the GWLL in points per game (3.15), was fourth in assists per game (1.31) and fifth (tied) in goals per outing (1.85). He had two five-point games as well as three four-point nights. Dalgarno is the second Buckeye to earn GWLL Newcomer of the Year honors, joining Pat Myers in 2000.
Sophomore attackman Buchanan, a native of Cockeysville, Md., ended the campaign tied for the team scoring lead with 41 points and had a team-best 26 goals. He had at least one point in every game this season (with at least two points in each of the last eight games) and ended the year on a 10-game goal-scoring streak. Buchanan had a league season-high eight-point game vs. Air Force and two six-point outings this season (Hobart, Army). His goal (26), assist (15) and point (41) totals all are career highs. Buchanan ended the season tied for third in the conference in goals per game (2.0) and points per game (3.15) and eighth in assists per game (1.15). He was named the GWLL Player of the Week Tuesday for the first time in his career.
Sophomore Pages was the first-team selection at the long stick midfielder position. A native of East Rockaway, N.Y., he was third for the Buckeyes with a career-high 33 groundballs. He played in all 13 Buckeyes games and scored a goal against Marist March 13. Pages had a career-high seven groundballs in the Buckeyes’ upset win at Army to close out the season.
Senior defenseman Yontz, from Columbus, Ohio, was a first-team All-GWLL selection this season after earning second-team accolades in 2005. He led the Buckeyes with 36 groundballs while starting in all 13 games. He had a career-best six groundballs in the win over Butler.
Wooster, Ohio, native senior Bender was a second-team All-GWLL selection at midfield for the second-consecutive season. He led the Buckeyes with a career-best 18 assists and was third in the league in assists per game (1.38). He had a career-high 32 points, ranking ninth in the conference in points per game. Bender had a personal-high six points against Butler April 14 and had two five-point outings (Penn State, Brown).
