Ohio State learns victory is best way to get crowd control
Sunday, February 04, 2007
BOB HUNTER

EAST LANSING, Mich. ? One hour and 20 minutes before the game, Greg Oden was on the floor by himself, shooting free throws. The students in the Iz-zone were already out there, doing their thing.
They cheered his misses, booed his makes, chanted "overrated" and "how old are you?" and said things that can?t be printed in a family newspaper. The Breslin Center is a tough place to practice, and it?s an even tougher place to play. Once the game started, the students brought out the big guns. One was toting a sign with Oden?s picture and his name, drawn to resemble a card from the AARP.

Rare feat for Ohio State

By LARRY LAGE AP Sports Writer

EAST LANSING, Mich. A once-in-a-generation player helped Ohio State do something for the first time in more than 30 years. Greg Oden had 16 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks to lead the fourth-ranked Buckeyes to a 63-54 win over Michigan State on Saturday.

AAhhhhhh yes! The last laugh, once again, proves to be best. That being said I wish we had some more fans like that in Columbus. Not necessarily mean like that but at least more passionate. Lot of people sit on there hands in the Schott still. MSU home game was the loudest I've been to in a while.

OHIO STATE MEN

Instead of card, Oden carries OSU

Sunday, February 04, 2007 Doug Lesmerises

Plain Dealer Reporter
East Lansing, Mich.- The sharpest Spartan in the Breslin Center on Saturday was the Michigan State student who held up a giant version of Greg Oden's AARP card, welcoming the mature-looking 19-year-old Ohio State center into the American Association of Retired Persons.
"It looked pretty good," Oden said. "Isn't that the old people's card to get all the benefits? You know what, I would take it. They'd be paying $13 for a movie, and I'm paying $2, I don't mind."

EAST LANSING, Mich. ? Ohio State is maturing on the road ? just not as fast as Michigan State's students think.
The raucous "Izzone" fan section called Greg Oden "Grandpa" on Saturday afternoon. One sign at the Breslin Center featured Oden with an AARP card.

I find it even funnier that a couple of them are yapping about Thad bitching at referees. This coming from fans of a team that has Tom fucking Izzo as it's coach. Hilarious.:slappy:

I'm not sure about you, but I have the world of respect for Izzo. I think he's a total class act. You're sounding an aweful lot like those MSU fans making a comment like that.

You could at least include the whole quotation when calling NF out.

Izzo complains more to the refs than any coach in the league. Do you disagree with that, Golfer? Even if it doesn't affect your high regard for the coach (ie "working the refs"), it srue seems a bit ironic for MSU fans to complain about our coach working the refs.

He might be a good basketball coach and recruiter but he is the biggest whiner in the Big 10. I also think that he helped us a great deal yesterday by getting that technical called on him.

I wish he would go coach the Pistons.

There, happy now? I'm not sure the first sentance makes any difference in the quotation. It was a blanket, emotional remark that sounded just like the MSU fans on the other board.

Do you honestly think Izzo has whined his way into becoming the second most winningest coach in MSU history other than Heathcoat? Yes I disagree with that statement. I think Bruce Weber complains just as much. You also have to take into account that Izzo makes horrible faces all the time that will attract a television camera. Every coach complains about calls they disagree with. He definitely complained more this game than most and he got a T for it, however, he doesn't complain this much every game.

What does Izzo's success have to do with this? Izzo is a great coach with plenty success... that doesn't change his style with the refs.

Izzo is well known for working the refs really hard, and his distraught faces are part of that charade. It usually is a productive endeavor, but it certainly happens every game, not just this past one.

As such, it's pretty comical for the fanbase that supports Izzo to complain about an opposing coach working the refs. Do you disagree with that?

I can agree that Weber is in the same ballpark.

agreed. the number of times that the fans booed about oden's possible traveling after being manhandled was also comical. as well, i had a nice chuckle hearing the fans boo the legitimate over-and-back call.

i've rarely seen a coach get away with standing so far onto the court while the ball is on that side of the court as weber gets away with it. he will stand a step onto the court even if the opponent who has the ball is at arm's length away.

i must say, though, that yesterday's game was a very poorly officiated game... for both teams. it really makes one wonder about their proficience when they review a three-pointer that was shot from at least three feet behind the arc.
