Wanna make $14 the hard way?
Did anyone else catch the premier on FX last night at 10:00? He and his girlfriend spent 30 days living in Columbus making minimum wage.

As a guy who comes from a fairly good background, it was a real eye-opener. Pretty good show.

I didn't catch the show or ever hear of it, could you fill me in a little more?

Sounds cool.

The same guy made the movie "Supersize me" wanted to see what it was like to live on minimum wage, so they agreed to lock up all credit/debit cards, checkbooks, etc.

They started with $300 cash, travelled to Columbus, found a crap-shack of an apartment (in an area called "the Bottoms") and then found jobs. He got like $7.00 an hour to work construction and landscaping jobs through a temp agency and she bussed tables and washed dishes dowtown in a coffee shop.

They both needed to go to the E.R.; so they had those bills to worry about. Basically it turned into a statement against the governement to take better care of lower-income families in the U.S.

They picked Columbus, because Ohio's unemployment rate is so high, it was the most critical state in the last election and Ohio is home to 3 of the 20 "poorest cities" (Cleveland, Cincinnati and Toledo) in the US.

Next week they're going to investigate how harmful 30 days worth of hormone treatments are to your body.

If I was doing experiments on myself, I am pretty sure I could find something a little more fun to do.....sex, drugs, alcohol, ball games, travel....anything but what this guy does. But, of course people wouldnt tune in to see somebody having fun or being happy.

Sounds like a left-wing propoganda machine to me.

I watched most of it last night and it was actually pretty good, but I quit watching it when his girlfriend jumped in his ass, in front of his two teenaged kids relatives who came to visit for the weekend, about spending money on them. She's an OK gal when things are going well, but when shit gets tough she becomes a whiny little cunt. She cried about having to walk to/from work to save money, but she didn't acknowledge that he was working two jobs, not one like her weak ass. They were lucky that they found that place that gave away free furniture and clothing to the poor.

As for making a statement against the way government treats our non-rich, they are dead-on. Big business runs this country like you wouldn't believe. Congress hasn't raised the minimum wage in eight fucking years because they say it would "ruin" business, yet Congress gets their raises every fucking year to the tune of $27,000 since the last time they raised the minimum wage.

The minimum wage raises itself. If $5.15 was the absolute minimum wage-why do illegal Mexicans get paid $10.00-they can't protest. The minimum wage only applies, for the most part to A-kids working summer jobs, and B-jobs in severely economically depressed regions like the heart of Appalachia, where people will take any job. The market sets wages, not the government.
Also, as a teacher, I say this-this is your payback for screwing around in class and not doing jack shit in class, for dropping out of HS, and in general having an I don't give a shit attitude, and then expecting Uncle Sam to magically wave a job wand and give you a job paying $15.00 an hour.

Not really...the market will pay a little as it can, and if it weren't for the minimum wage base there would be jobs paying $2.50-$3.00 an hour. And not all folks working minimum wage jobs are there because they were fuck-offs in school...many are forced to take these jobs because of layoffs, downsizing, and other factors.

The one guy they talked to last night started working in like 1976 for GM. At the time he made $7.55 an hour (plus benfits). He was working for the same temp agency as the dude in the show, for $7.00 per hour, with no benefits.

29 years later, he's making less money on the hour.

Why would employers pay $7.00 an hour if they could get away w/ paying $5.15? Are they going to pay $1.85 an hour more out of the goodness of their hearts-i don't think so? They pay $7.00 an hour because they have basically figured out that that is the amount they need to pay in order to attract workers who will show up and do the job. Teachers get paid less than Wall Street brokers because people-myself included-are willing to teach for less than $40,000 a year, but people are not willing to work 100 hour weeks under constant pressure for less than six figures.
I found this quote from an economics professor, which explains the logic of minimum wage laws- "if the minimum wage is such a good idea, we should raise it to $200 an hour so we'd all be rich."
