It didn't take long for George Washington III to assert himself as a leader on the court at a new school, even as an underclassman.

After moving from Texas to Kentucky ahead of his sophomore season, the top-50 overall prospect and No. 9 combo guard in the class of 2023 was already taking command of his new team at the Christian Academy of Louisville by the first practice.

“He comes into a brand new school, I’m the first-year head coach there, he comes into a team that had seven seniors on it, and right away when I was like, ‘Alright guys, it’s time to stretch.’ Next thing you know, he’s the vocal leader right away; ‘Balls up, time to stretch, here we go,” and he took it from there and ran with it," Aaron Hill, Washington's high school coach, told Eleven Warriors. "Everyone was bought in as him being kind of the vocal leader, the champion, the captain of the team. That’s what impressed me the most about him as a kid and just as a player in general. He is just a phenomenal vocal leader, floor general and just knows how to get people involved."

Becoming the first commit in Ohio State's class of 2023 on Wednesday, Washington is leading the way for a new program once again.

The 6-foot-2, 165-pound wing began his official visit to Columbus last Friday and it was on the drive home when he knew he wanted to be a Buckeye.






“I think it was on the ride back from the visit when me and my parents were in the car and we started talking about it. That night we decided to pray about it and make the decision the next day,” said Washington III

“He was telling me when his kids were going through a decision, he told me to make a list of the top four or five things that they feel like were the most important to them to have in their college,” Washington said. “They went through and compared all the schools, and when they found the school that had offered them that had matched all those things on their list, and they really felt connected to the school and they felt needed there and they wanted to be there, that there’s no real reason to hold it off.”

What an amazing commitment, don't know how I missed this one. But better late than never, welcome to the family Mr. Washington! Side note - kind of crazy there was only one other George Washington after our founding father.

Ok, I am done with that. Seriously, big pickup and great start to the class.

“I told coach this after I told him I was committing. I just said, ‘Who do you want me to go get?’ Because I wanted to be a guy that goes out and talks to other dudes and really get a great team together for when we all get there,” Washington said. “That’s how all the best teams have been made nowadays. That’s what Duke did with R.J. (Barrett) and Zion (Williamson). At this point, I feel like players recruiting is just as big of a deal now as the coaches. So we have to do our part too.”

As far as names of other 2023 recruits he plans to reach out to, Washington said he’s just waiting on the word from Holtmann and Pedon to point him toward the players they are targeting.

Just sayin': You have to love it when a recruit becomes a recruiter....:nod:

Evans #1, he's a one and done talent and can play the 3 or 4
Stewart #2, 6'8" and growing, could be a PF/C

Now, Evans is going to be a really tough draw. He's originally from Baltimore area and Skinn had a relationship with him, but everyone is after him. Assuming its clear he isn't coming, I think Stewart is #1, then if you think he is likely to be a PF, you go after a center like Parks. Griffin is a great athlete, but I don't know that I have him high on my list. if we are looking at a 2/3, I think I like Lamothe better as he makes others around him better. He's got combo guard skills, but the body of a big wing. He is also from Baltimore area.

The trip wasn’t Washington’s first to campus. He took an official visit during the weekend of Oct. 30 and took in a football game against Penn State, but this was his first chance to see a men’s basketball game in person.

Seated behind the Ohio State bench, Washington said he paid particular attention to the team’s point guards.

“You get to see how the coaches interact with the players, the point guards, which obviously is a position I’m looking at really closely to fill in, how they interact with the coaches, with the players,” he said. “It gives you a really close feel to what it’s like being in the game. I really appreciated that. It’s one thing to get that from sitting in multiple practices. It takes another step forward when you’re right there in the game.”

After the game, Washington said he spent time meeting with Diebler and special assistant to the head coach Mike Netti, who helped oversee the offense in Pedon’s absence. He had video chats with Holtmann and Pedon and hung out in the locker room, where he talked to the likes of Malaki Branham, Gene Brown III, Meechie Johnson Jr., E.J. Liddell, Jimmy Sotos and Jamari Wheeler.
