2026 World Cup (Official Thread)

StubHub sold ‘ghost tickets’ for World Cup months before real ones were issued, CBC finds

Calls mount for bans on speculative tickets as StubHub cancels on thousands of fans

A CBC News investigation into resale website StubHub has found evidence the company advertised and allowed speculative listings for World Cup tickets months before FIFA actually released any seats.

The resale giant is facing a storm of controversy and calls for stricter regulation over what’s known as “speculative ticketing” after the company stranded thousands of soccer fans, cancelling ticket orders just hours before game time when deals with sellers fell through.

“We're calling for governments to pay attention,” said Stephen Parker, executive director of the National Independent Venue Association (NIVA), the live industry association for the United States. He’s written Congress calling for a ban on scalper speculation.

“You cannot sell a car that you don't own. You can't sell a house that you do not own.… If you take money for something and then don't deliver it, that's fraud.”

Just sayin': Does Barney Rubble now work at StubHub?

Folarin Balogun available for USMNT vs. Belgium as red card ban suspended

Folarin Balogun will be available to play the USMNT’s round-of-16 World Cup match against Belgium with his one-game red-card ban now suspended, sources briefed on the process have told The Athletic.

The 25-year-old received a straight red card against Bosnia and Herzegovina on Wednesday for a foul on defender Tarik Muharemovic, a sanction which is automatically accompanied by a one-game suspension under Article 10.5 of FIFA’s rules for the tournament.

Multiple FIFA officials told The Athletic after the game that a team is not able to appeal against a red card or the subsequent suspension.

However, sources with knowledge of the matter, who spoke anonymously to protect relationships, say Balogun is set to be available to face Rudi Garcia’s side as his ban has been suspended.

Article 27 of FIFA’s disciplinary code states that “the judicial body may decide to fully or partially suspend the implementation of a disciplinary measure.”

It adds: “If the person benefiting from a suspended sanction commits another infringement of a similar nature and gravity during the probationary period, the suspension shall be revoked by the judicial body and the sanction enforced without prejudice to any additional sanction imposed for the new infringement.”

I think they do this for CFB too.

A few months ago there were $52 standing room tickets “available” for the LSU-Clemson game on Sept 5. I don’t think those tickets existed and have disappeared in recent weeks.

Feel free to move these next few comments to the political board if it isn’t appropriate for here but I am generally a fan of less regulation and government intervention, but when a firm monopolizes a particular industry (stub hub/ticketmaster) and does such a crappy job of operating in that industry, I get why someone needs to step in and enforce regulations.

Also, a little corruption. We’re a proper footballing nation now.

(Right decision anyway. Middle finger to the rest of the world. I don’t care)
Yeah, it definitely looks like an arbitrary let’s favor the home team decision, but the initial red card was shit. What there should be is an established appeals process for situations like this. It shouldn’t be a we’re going to cut down your punishment for “reasons” situation but rather a the initial decision was wrong so we’re overturning it and there’s no punishment at all situation.
