2026 tOSU Offense Discussion

Overall rushing stats

37 carries 78 yards

Skewed by Sayin: 5 for -26

I am going to have to bite the bullet and re watch a condensed version to solely focus on the OL.

West ran very well in his limited touches; Jackson was rock solid imo, but West ran particularly well yesterday afternoon. So the OL can create creases and space for the rush.

I really don’t know anything about our routes or route trees, but it seems like a lot of our pass plays are slow developing and the routes are relatively deep. IU killed us with quick slants. Do we have slants, crossers, picks that we can run to get the ball out quicker and negate the OL protection problems?

Losing my mind asking myself this. We see MAC teams do it; we see teams less talented do it.

We can’t we run a timed out/hook route on third and two? Why can’t/don’t we run anything with any semblance of intermediate distance to combat elite DLs?

It looks like berthing is a 15-20 yard route.

The TE plays were working great and we inexplicably went away from it. I always learned you run it until they stop it, then once they stop it, come back to it in a bit.

What’s everyone’s take on Julian? He is not as good this year which statistically is accurate to say.

I don’t really get why? OL is the same as last year, RBs are back… I guess he doesn’t have a legit #2 but other than that I don’t get his performance this year.

Could be more tape on him and there’s a clear recipe to just attack him?

I hope he can get healthy because he’s still a good QB but his year has been an odd one. I expect him back next year at this point.

I think Carnell Tate was that important, and yes, there is a lot more tape out there on Julian's strengths and weaknesses. "Sophomore slump" is a saying for a reason. Add in the pressure that he was a finalist for the Heisman last season, that he is playing for the most watched program in the country, throwing to the best college WR ever, and a lot of expectations come with that. Hopefully Julian heals up well and soon. Sometimes gaining the perspective of the game from the sidelines while hurt helps the QB when he comes back.

So 32 for 104 isn't as bad as it could've been

One of the biggest things we've gotten away from, moving Coach Chip --> Arthur, has been our play action and built in misdirection on early downs. This was something Chip was a great at; Think, that opening touchdown to Jeremiah on the backside slide route vs Oregon in the Rose Bowl. Conflict + misdirection + simplicity.

Most of the early down quick hitters are built off concepts like 'hank' dragon' 'bow' 'stick' and 'hitches'. Classic, but lack some of the necessary pop in efficiency at times when ran too much with little early down explosive compliment. We tried to integrate a few RPO glance concepts and called them vs Texas, but had some pretty bad results.

The OL hasn't been as bad as it was last year. They've done a better job handling fronts & stunts they struggled with (BOSS was a big one) Could they improve? Absolutely. But they aren't quite the liability they were this time last year.

Moving to an even shorter QB is that a lot of your throws tend to stress the perimeter where more favorable throwing windows can be found (less chances of a tip) downside is that, in order to help keep those perimeter throws viable, it's best to pair it with a running game that really threatens downhill.

Two formations that I liked yesterday that we only used sparingly were #4 lined up to one side with either 2TE or extra OL lined up opposite. The latter in particular would give Luke an easy 'count the guys' RPO that he should be able to handle as as a frosh.

Need to find the elusive spark in the running game while our new qbs get their bearings.

I've mentioned, somewhere around this board before, that a popular NFL trend is to be in 13p (I call it 12p+ when it's another big body WR or 'move' TE/H) in order to get your 'X' receiver isolated.

This was from yesterday and Day is clearly borrowing from that trend. Only this is in the gun and it's built-out with an RPO glance off Jeremiah.
Safety Jeremiah's side pushes out over him = belly the rock

Only this team still struggles to get push along the interior while Indy is great at reducing their front and squeezing space to the inside.
