2026 tOSU Defense Discussion

I had a horrific nightmare last night. The defense was getting absolutely shredded in every game and as surrendering 30 ppg or something.

We were getting gashed on the ground, the air and everything in between. It was like Cal in 2013 and Maryland in 2018.

I woke up in a cold sweat panicked and sought my 8 year old daughter for psychological safety.

Shit felt so real.

Did she have schematic ideas for how to solve this?

Been seeing a lot of people weirdly lukewarm on the defense which is surprising to me I guess. Yeah they didn't look like a generational defense from the jump but they definitely looked like they'll be a Top 5 unit by the end of the year. They honestly looked better than I thought. Other than the trick play there weren't any huge busts like we'd usually see.

I think people will overreact to things they see, and Ohio State fans (I know everyone does) tend to forget the other team is going to give Ohio State its best shot right out of the gate, even in bodybag games.

I seriously doubt the defense did anything but basic stuff yesterday - I didn't get to watch much until the 4th quarter. If Ball State's coaches have any talent whatsoever, they know there would be some basic cover 3 defense going on most the day with not a lot of blitzing. Again I didn't see a lot, but if the tackling was good, the schematic stuff doesn't bother me much.

I thought they did exactly what they were supposed to do. Tons of pressure and no rushing lanes vs a team with a QB that’s mobile and the strength of their team being their OL.

There were comments by the commentators that a good QB makes OSU pay for certain things and they can get right off with that. There were zero busts in coverage and Ball State was lucky we didn’t have 6+ sacks.

The secondary is going to be the best in the country. The question I have is the end opposite Jackson and how will the LBs hold up vs an elite offense. Atkinson looked no different to me than he did last year. However, Wilder on the other hands is different. I’d like to see him wide on pass downs not inside.

People might get caught up on the 1 team sack stat but their 330lb quarterback definitely didn’t have much time at all. Would be more curious about the hurries data if there are any.

For their first game as a unit I don’t see how anyone could be bothered. They were very sound but I’ll admit the front looked pretty lacksadasical.
