It’s a lack of execution and efficiency. The skill is the same as it is outside the red zone.Through 13 games this season, the Buckeye offense has only 12 scoring plays of 20+ yards, which is the fewest since the 2003 season when the team had only six such scores (that was the team that featured Lydell Ross, Maurice Hall, and converted DB Ira Guilford at tailback, a dynamic trio that carried the ball 25 times for 47 yards against Iowa). Yes, even the 2020 COVID squad had more of a big-play offense, with 13 scores of 20+ yards in just 8 games.
Interestingly (or not) the shortest of the Ohio State offense's long scores is 33 yards, which means the Buckeyes are not creating dynamic plays as they near the red zone. I don't know if this is intentional (run clock, reduce possessions), or if it is lack of ability (don't know why this would be the case), or if it is mere coincidence.
And when running 3 tight ends with Jeremiah and they go one on one run a slant or a fade based on db leverage instantlyIt’s a lack of execution and efficiency. The skill is the same as it is outside the red zone.
Coaches need to take a look in the mirror on RZ play design and play calling.
You can do that - I think the point is, there has to be a mix or combination somewhere in there that would be effective. Going 4 TEs and a single running back is fairly consistently stopped and it seems they are ALWAYS out-manned at the point of attack. And when running 3 tight ends with Jeremiah and they go one on one run a slant or a fade based on db leverage instantly
Don’t forget punt returning, although that seems to finally be at least competent over the last few weeks.Yeah they need to look at all of it. Play designs, tendencies, personnel groups, game plans the lot.
They can’t do anything about the IOL at this point, that’s the only structural issue.
The rest is coaching really and to be fair, I have little to no doubt they can do it. Coaching offensive football has never been a bitch of mine about Day.
If I am generalizing, Redzone stuff and place kicking have been the weaknesses that show up with some level of consistency over his tenure.
