2025 tOSU Defense Discussion

NCAA ranking in a few key stats:

1st - Points per game with 5.86

1st - Third Down Conversions Allowed at 21.3%

1st - Red Zone Defense at 50%, although I prefer the 2.08 points per possession number (also 1st by a wide margin)

2nd - Total Defense at 216.9 yards/game (Oklahoma is at 213.0)
also:

1. Opp yards per point at 33. Last year it was 19.8
2. Texas at 24.8
almost a ten yard difference

also, as one would expect from that stat

1. Opp points per play at .113. Last year was .202

You have to work harder for longer against this defense than any other. It doesn't give up explosives and makes you grind out 33 yards to get a point.

That is tough to beat

I don’t think we’ll see a LB duo as athletic as Arvell and Sonny for a long, long time. Just enjoy the year we get of it…..it’s incredible.
Just sayin': You could say Chris Spielman and anybody, Randy Gradishire and anybody, and/or Tom Cousineau and anybody were a great linebacker group; however, the best actual group of Ohio State linebackers that I remember were A. J. Hawk, Bobby Carpenter, and Anthony Schlegel.

Cool linebacker article by 11W:

Really impressive stats. If this continues it's hard to imagine us losing to anyone.

The key word is “athletic”….not necessarily the “best” duo.

These kids are freaks athletically.

I'd give the edge to Reese and Styles, but Hawk and Carpenter were elite athletes too.

Just sayin': Even several years after playing, Anthony Schlegel still showed that "unique athletic ability" to tackle a fan in the open field.....

If you want to talk "athletic" linebackers then we should be looking at 1998 with Andy Katzenmoyer and Na'il Diggs up there with anyone.

Best duo at what LB's were asked to do at the time: Spiels and Pepper Johnson (not the best athletes, best players)
