2025 scUM Shenanigans, Arguments, etc.

The complete silence from the TV networks who have major interests in college football I think is a bad sign for scUM too. I'm assuming they probably know quite a bit about what's really going on with their product. If this was truly a "lol overzealous Ohio State fans are just jealous" type situation you'd have ESPN mentioning it and laughing it off, they kind of did that for a couple of days when this all first broke but the narrative quickly turned to where it basically wasn't allowed to ever be brought up (and at that point they even started going out of their way to prop scUM up in only a fluffy manner), and they remain completely silent now after the latest yahoo story.

They are going to of course hold out as long as they can before they actually have to have the uncomfortable discussion about how the product they have heavy interests in was compromised for multiple years.

If this were the Buckeyes it would be doom scrolling on sEcSPN

I don't think the media outlets know anything or there would be leaks all over the place.

It isn't like the tsun name doesn't move the needle in terms of eyeballs.

College football programs with largest fan bases:

1. Ohio State — 11.26 million

2. Notre Dame — 8.21 million

3. Texas — 7.82 million

4. Penn State — 6.36 million

5. Michigan — 6.26 million

So yeah, Michigan getting nuked for a couple years is not ideal for the networks.

And jeez, the semifinals should have been a ratings bonanza instead of very meh.

I think if "nothing much is going to come of this" then the NCAA woulda folded and gave the wrist slap a long time ago. They must have at least something on scUM or they wouldn't keep at it and not allowing scUM to easily settle.
Agreed! I'm persuaded to believe that the penalties are so severe that the cheaters know it is going to severely damage both the program as well as the schools reputation. They are definitely caught between a rock and a hard place. Fighting it is there only option which only makes the NCAA even more pissed and determined to hammer them.

The suspended low level Ohio State staffer story was a news link headline on the front page of ESPN.com.

Meanwhile radio silence on scUMs multi year cheating scheme.
Remember a few years ago.... wait - it may have been like 2004. Sheesh, I'm old. That was 20 years ago?
Remember when the OSU women's diving team or something was "receiving impermissible benefits"? It was something like they were going to a dentist who wasn't filing their insurance paperwork correctly. So they got free dentist work. But they were insured, and if the dentist did the paperwork correctly, the insurance company would have gotten the bill. So the only one benefiting was the insurance company. Maybe I have all those details wrong, but that's how I remember it.
Anyway, that whole story was on ESPN's front page of their college football site.

Yep, DFBIAs claims that the media protects Ohio State from any negative press and that the NCAA is "witch hunting" scUM at the direction of Ohio State are pure comedy.

I think the ratings are a function of a couple of things:

- Fatigue: Yes, football is wildly popular, but the amount available to watch is so much larger than it used to be. Plus, Bowl games used to attract huge numbers because traditionally there was a 4-6 week layoff between the regular season ending and the Bowls. That's not the case anymore. With conference championship games, the regular season extended out for some programs and earlier and earlier bowl games, there's no gap there anymore.
- Diminishing luster of "big games": Remember how HUGE tOSU/Texas was in 2005? It was a matchup between two traditional powers who didn't play each other. It was an event. Bowls were an opportunity to see 2 schools that ordinarily wouldn't face off. Big OOC games were an attraction. Now, with these "super conferences", these matchups happen routinely and it's watered down everything else.
- Mounting frustration with the state of CFB in general: I've said numerous times, I now consume a fraction of CFB that I used to. My Saturdays were spent watching CFB all day for much of my adult life until a couple of years ago. Now, honestly, pretty much all I watch is tOSU games, and frankly not even all of those like I did for years. The transfer portal, NIL, and all of the ridiculous realignment has eroded the charm that CFB once had. It just feels like another pro league at this point and I think that's taking a toll.

- Realization that there was one super team, and a bunch of plucky go getters who were hoping they didn't get demolished.
