2025-2026 Ohio State Men's Basketball

I know a lot of folks don’t want to acknowledge what @buckeyemania11 is saying, but he is spot on IMO. There’s no reason why the Buckeyes can’t field a solid Bball team.

I agree Diebler was a lazy hire by the AD. There are good coaches who would love to coach at t OSU. There’s no reason we can’t be successful in both football and basketball. We have been before and can be so again. If there was a bad hire it started with hiring Bork.

I agree we need to let Diebler finish the season. Anything outside of an NCAA seeding means time to move on and do a real coaching search .

I think a lot of the Diebler hire defenders think everyone "hating" on him is expecting Ohio State to be an annual national title contender. This is not true. That is unrealistic but I don't think making the tourney without having to hope to back in more often that not is an "unrealistic" expectation at all. Ohio State should not be a "learning on the job* type place and that's exactly where we are at with Diebler. You are basically hoping he figures it out after 3 or 4 years and that's a lot of hoping.

I still think you give him one more year, given the semi-shit hand he’s been dealt, but I don’t expect much improvement and would can him after next season if things go as expected.

He's absolutely getting one more year. The problem becomes is the AD willing to make a change if next year ends up similar? At this point I don't think they are. I think he's pretty much assured 4 years unless next year like a a 10 or less win level disaster. Ohio State should not be a "learn on the job" and hope they figure it out after a few years type of place but that's basically what our lazy athletic department has relegated us to with Diebler.

Next year tOSU will be without Thornton, Tilly and Noel. Still a nice nucleus, but the xfer from Indiana hasn't impressed me. You don't get to be Mr. Ohio without scoring a ton of points, and to date, he hasn't done that. Sure, he can dribble around, but not the same as Thornton's 20+ points per game. Current big backup simply doesn't appear to have the chops that are needed. And who knows who's going to stick around? Mobley is better at the two than the one. He's more of a set-up shooter than a stop-and-pop player, like Thornton and Devin. So, go out and buy a one-hit wonder at center? So far, Diebs is batting one for two.

I doubt a change will be made, but if the season does implode, the Fredo of Ohio coach might be worth a look. He's young (44), coached under Miller at Xavier and did a year at Ohio State as a GA. He has no real ties to Fredo, and after this year, he ain't staying at Fredo. It would make sense to give him some serious consideration.

Hard pass on Steele.

He was very mediocre coaching Xavier for 4 seasons before getting fired and then landing at Miami OH. Just screams like a guy who's just meant to be a MAC level coach.

You have to take into context that this isn't 25+ years ago where it was a normal thing for coaches to be given 4-5 or even more years. If you give a flailing guy too many years now you are just really hurting your program and setting it back further with each year.

Honestly has Diebler shown ANYTHING as an ACTUAL BASKETBALL COACH to give any real confidence and enthusiasm that he is going to be able to actually put things together and turn the ship around? I see a guy who is clearly in over his head. There's been no noticeable progression with him as a coach between year 1 and year 2.

We need to let this season play out. The off-season will tell us a lot about where things stand with Diebler. Who he loses and who he brings in will be a strong indicator of where he stands with his players and what kind of resources he is being given to work with for next year.

Maybe it's because I've lowered my expectations from the Holtmann years, but some positives I see from Diebler:
- We don't see the total 2nd half collapses that we used to see under Holtmann.
- We see set plays coming out of breaks that are actually converted.
- This team handles the press better than what we've seen in the past.
- Good free shooting

I know they aren't firing him now. And yea this season is going to play out.

My main argument is that he shoulda never gotten the job in the first place. Where is Diebler now if we didn't just hand him the job? He's not the head coach at another high major program, that's for sure. Maybe some low major program throws him a flier to be their coach at best or he's back at being an assistant at some other program. It just seems inexplicable that a place like Ohio State essentially made a low major type of move. The last 2 coaching situations here have been grossly flopped.

I guess we see things very differently. I don't think Diebler has grown much as an actual coach from year 1 to 2, I think we still see a lot of the same problems we had under Holtman. We are essentially in a "learn on the job" type situation hoping he maybe totally figures it out and turns the ship around in a couple of years, and if it doesn't the program is in worse shape than it was when he was hired.
