2025-2026 Ohio State Men's Basketball

Anyone hearing what/where Stewart is leaning towards? And/or is Diebs gonna sweeten the pot to help him stay? Looking at what has left, versus what is coming in, could see him being more of a player this year. Never did hear why he portaled, maybe it's recoverable? Thanks in advance.

It doesn't sound like Stewart leaving was a money issue. More likely where he fit in the rotation.

Baylor transfer Josh Ojianwuna was in Columbus over the weekend. The 6'10" center is coming off of knee surgery and most likely won't be ready for the start of the season.
Stewart claimed he wanted a larger role. He had as big of a role at OSU as he could withstand, IMO. If Stewart wants to be the focal point of the offense, he's got to drop down to mid-major schools. Stewart will not be a go-to guy offensively at any power conference program. OSU is recruiting role players to replace him, these are guys that can start but won't be the top- or second-option offensively.

No. 8 - Ohio State

Can Ohio State get back to the NCAA Tournament next season? The Buckeyes will return a pair of key players in Bruce Thornton and Devin Royal, and have also added some good pieces via the portal this spring. Dancing in 2026 should be the expectation for Ohio State.

Just sayin': Does getting into the NCAA tournament make for a successful 2025/2026 season?

If they make the tournament without having to sweat it come the end of the season i'd call it a positive step forward. Limping their way in and making it only at the mercy of the selection committee I wouldn't call much progress

Just sayin': Yeah, compared to last season it would be a positive step. Besides always getting into the NCAA Tournament*, the standard should usually be getting a B1G Tournament seed equal to or higher than #4 and never a seed lower than #8.

* Ohio State should always be at least a top 50 team with a handful of quality wins.

You’re Nuts: Which Buckeye men’s basketball player will take the biggest jump next season?

Jake Diebler retained a good chunk of last year’s team, but he needs those players to continue to improve.

Connor: Taison Chatman

As good as Devin Royal has been, he actually wasn’t the highest-rated recruit in Ohio State’s 2023 recruiting class. That honor goes to Chatman, who was No. 39 in the 247Sports composite rankings in that class.

He only played in 17 games two years ago as a freshman, but what I remember being impressed by in his limited minutes is that fact that he never looked rushed. He settled way too often, taking 15 of his 18 shots that year from three-point range, but I the shots usually came in a rhythm and Chatman took them confidently. He was 6-of-18 shooting over 17 games during the 2023-2024 season, and was 4-for-15 from three-point range.

Like it or not, Chatman is going to play a crucial role on this year’s team. Thornton and Mobley will start, but right now it is looking like Chatman and Gabe Cupps could be the other guards in the rotation, as well as incoming freshman Dorian Jones.

Justin: John Mobley Jr.

As big of a jump Devin Royal took from his freshman to sophomore season, I expect the same from John Mobley Jr.

This is not necessarily true regarding statistics, since Royal had a much smaller role in his freshman season than Mobley did, so it was easier for all of his stats to go up. I expect him to take a large leap in college basketball acumen and maturity.

A large part of playing college basketball is learning how to play college basketball, and the offseason from freshman to sophomore season is a pivotal time for that development. As a freshman, you are still dealing with the transition to college life, and now as a sophomore, you can focus more on the actual basketball since you have adjusted.

Mobley was put into a tough spot last season as a true freshman, as he was thrust into a starting role and one of the top minutes played for the Buckeyes after Meechie Johnson left the team. He went through some growing pains, but ultimately played very well for a freshman, even briefly popping up on NBA Draft boards.

Now, he will head into his second season with all that experience.

Had forgotten about Chatman. Season-long leg injury, never (?) got on the court. He did stick around, so here's hoping he carves out some minutes. Mobley blossomed as a frosh, so yeah, hopefully a big sophomore jump. Maybe, just maybe, the addition of solid bigs can make this an effective team. Do wonder, (as in last years football team), how much NIL $ was spread around to keep this core intact. Someone, sometime, will put pen to paper and enlighten us. Go Bucks!

Mobley is the obvious answer. He had a promising freshman season, he has a really strong base of skills to build off of and it's easy to see how he can take his game to a higher level. The question is he was so productive, can you really say he can make a jump? Chatman has good shooting skills but he wasn't good at valuing the ball, would turn it over far too often & as a lead guard that's a bad trait to have, so I think Chatman is going to be a role player at best.
