Meanwhile scUM lands a top PG transfer from UNC

Bama lands a top transfer as well

"but but we are a football school!"

Get the feeling we are going to end up with scraps in the end. This problem goes beyond Diebler, as mentioned a million times the Athletic Department has straight out proven they could care less about basketball (See Bjork claiming this season was one that met expectations) it's not a shock nobody of merit wants to come play here. Hard to blame a fan base for "not caring" when the Athletic Department wants to put no real effort into the program.

Let's be real, not every starter from the portal is great. Elliot Cadeau is not a great player. He is a good player, I'm not saying he's awful, but he's not someone who really moves the meter. We need a big-time post player, and if Bruce leaves, a big-time guard - but we'll have to wait and see if we actually need that first. It would be nice if we got starter-level players at another position, but its not quite as important. We have to put all of our chips into getting first a big man, and second (if necessary) replacing Bruce.

Serious malaise has set in with me. I can't remember the last time I was invested past January. I'll let the off-season play out, but if there's not any signs of real improvement, can't say I'll even give a damn come November.

We've been a very ordinary program for a decade now. I just want something to be enthused about more than a couple of games into the B1G schedule. It feels like as long as the football program is a cash cow, basketball is an afterthought.

I was hardcore on blaming Diebler but in a cooler mind set it's not even his fault, the Athletic Department took the complete lazy route in just appointing the assistant of a failed former coach they just fired, they didn't even bother to even try to look for anyone else. Bjork's comments make it clear that he isn't going to do anything when it comes to the hoops program. 100% as long as they can just coast off the success of the football team, as long as the basketball team isnt completely awful (like 10 win near last in the conference awful) and the coaches aren't rocking the boat and bringing negative press or anything like that, they will just let it be and claim expectations are met.

Meanwhile other historic football schools are managing to kill it. It is 100% possible to be elite at both. We won't be though because they don't want to put the effort in.

Here’s a (not so) fun exercise now that all coaching vacanies are filled in the league. Rank the Big Ten coaches.

Very good chance Diebler is the bottom. Probably the lowest paid, least experienced, and worst (non-existent) resume.

That said, I’m with bm11. The investment starts at the top. Diebs clearly has to still overcome some Holtmann tendencies on the court (late collapses, droughts, playing style) and off the court (roster construction, transfer portal).

But you need serious investment to compete. With smaller rosters and what kid’s expect compared to NBA contracts, the price of basketball talent is high. The current AD has shown no interest in doing what it takes and that’s just sad.

In the NIL age, you need full buy-in from the AD and a war chest to compete with the big boys. We don't get that, we will be stuck in 15-18 win purgatory most years and I fear that's what's happening.
