2024 tOSU Defense Discussion

“I think that's something all four of us and really eight of us on the D-line talk about is being dominant,” Sawyer said. “There's no ceiling to how good we can be this year, and we know that it's all about us going out there and doing it. We can talk about it all day, but until we go out there and do it, it doesn't mean a damn thing. So we're all excited to get out there, man, we're hungry. And I've seen just a different level of determination to chase greatness than I've seen since I've been here.”

At this point I’m in “just show me” mode. Just hanging by HS stars at this point. I’m not saying he’s been bad, but if the goal is to be elite go do it because the last two off seasons it’s been nothing but a discussion.
Well I mean they were ranked the #3 defense last year. They’ve shown us more than enough to say they’re a good defense.

Can they be generational is the question?

Five FBS teams have pitched a shut-out this season

Not one of them played a FBS opponent

Shut outs of FBS teams are rare

I expect one today anyway. I don't remember ever expecting one before
Same. I really hope we can hold to under 14 though… It won’t feel right giving up like 17 or something.

But I suppose if it’s all on the back ups and they get tons of reps at least there’d be that. Need to work on finding enjoyment in the games though and not find the faults.

The number of FBS teams that have pitched a shut-out has risen to 13

Three of those shut out FBS teams. However, all 3 of them (Alabama, Kentucky, and Texas) allowed the opponent into their red zone at least once.

By contrast, 16 teams have held teams out of the red-zone.

Only two of those played FBS teams (Ohio State and Nebraska). However, the Cornhuskers allowed UTEP to score a touchdown from outside of the red zone.

Thus, the Silver Bullets are the only team to have faced an FBS opponent to have not allowed any opponent with possession of the ball to cross their 20 yard line so far this year.

Ohio State is still the only team to have not allowed anyone to cross their 20 yard line this year.

Correction:

Last week, Ohio State was the only team THAT PLAYED AN FBS OPPONENT that kept that opponent out of the Red Zone

There were however, 12 teams that held FCS opponents out of the Red Zone. I don't count games against FCS in my stats.

Of those 12 teams, 10 allowed an FBS opponent into their red zone this week.

So there are three teams that have not allowed anyone into their red zone this year.

Ohio State (Akron - Western Michigan)
Missouri (Murray State - Buffalo)
Purdue (Indiana State Sycamores - Bye)

Red = FCS
