Ohio State Football Countdown: 49

One play or big moment per day as we count down to the start of Ohio State’s 2023 football season

Play of the Day: Mike Weber’s 49-yard TD vs. Oregon State (2018)

I’m going to be honest: until I started looking for plays for this countdown, I had zero recollection of this game ever happening. Maybe it was my brain wanting to forget everything about the 2018 Ohio State defense, but alas this long Mike Weber run was still pretty sweet and does make the cut. Weber finished the afternoon with 183 yards and three touchdowns as the Buckeyes beat up on the Beavers, 77-31. Dwayne Haskins threw for over 300 yards with five TDs through the air, while Terry McLaurin had a big day as well with four catches for 121 yards and two scores.

Ohio State Football Countdown: 48

One play or big moment per day as we count down to the start of Ohio State’s 2023 football season.

Play of the Day: C.J. Stroud’s 48-yd rushing TD vs. Michigan State (2020)

C.J. Stroud introduced himself to the world first as a runner, taking this option keeper 48 yards for a touchdown in a blowout against Michigan State in 2020. Stroud would only finish with 136 rushing yards total in his collegiate career, instead throwing for over 8,100 yards over two seasons as Ohio State’s starting quarterback. The Buckeyes easily dispatched the Spartans 52-12 in East Lansing that day behind 300 total yards and four total TDs by Justin Fields, with Chris Olave leading the way through the air with 139 yards receiving and Trey Sermon on the ground with 112 yards rushing.

Ohio State Football Countdown: 47

One play or big moment per day as we count down to the start of Ohio State’s 2023 football season.

Play of the Day: Binjimen Victor’s 47-yard TD vs. Penn State (2018)

This next play on our countdown is an absolutely wild one, as Binjimen Victor makes a crazy catch over the defender and then glides down the field 47 yards for a crucial touchdown against Penn State in 2018. The grab in itself is impressive, but the way Victor uses his long strides to work his way down the field past defenders and into the end zone feels like it happens in slow motion. Ohio State came back to win this game 27-26, as this TD set up the game-winner by K.J. Hill a short while later, and Chase Young’s fourth down tackle with a minute left sealed the deal.

Ohio State Football Countdown: 46

One play or big moment per day as we count down to the start of Ohio State’s 2023 football season.

Play of the Day: Devin Smith’s 46-yard TD vs. Indiana (2012)

It’s weird watching Devin Smith in the No. 15, but it isn’t weird watching him score a long touchdown. While this one was of the catch-and-run variety, Smith made a name for himself at Ohio State as a tremendous deep threat, and caught more than his fair share of TDs during his four years in Columbus — 30, in fact. Indiana made this game interesting, as a 22-point 4th quarter for the Hoosiers resulted in the Buckeyes needing to hold on for a 52-49 victory in Bloomington. Miller threw for over 200 yards and ran for nearly 150 more with three total TDs, while Smith caught two balls for 106 yards — both long touchdowns.

Ohio State Football Countdown: 45

One play or big moment per day as we count down to the start of Ohio State’s 2023 football season.

Play of the Day: Archie Griffin scores a TD in 2023 spring game

College football’s only two-time Heisman Trophy winner made a special appearance during this year’s Ohio State spring game, scoring an honorary touchdown during the third quarter of the scrimmage. Of course, the No. 45 is synonymous with Griffin, as his jersey number was retired back in 1999. One of the best to ever do it, Griffin holds the Buckeyes’ career rushing record with 5,589 yards over his four years in Columbus — a mark that will likely stand the test of time. Griffin is one of eight players to have their jersey retired by Ohio State.
