Ohio State Football Countdown: 53

One play or big moment per day as we count down to the start of Ohio State’s 2023 football season.

Play of the Day: Brian Hartline’s 53-yard TD vs. Michigan (2008)

The criteria clearly state decade or so, so I feel like I can stretch the boundary a bit to bring you this moment. Long before he was stacking five-star receivers as a coach in Columbus, he was catching long touchdown passes against the Wolverines at Ohio Stadium. The Buckeyes made it look easy against their rival in this edition of The Game, beating up on Rich Rodriguez’s squad 42-7. For Ohio State, it was an unprecedented fifth-straight victory in the rivalry.

Play of the Day: TreVeyon Henderson’s 52-yard TD vs. Tulsa (2021)

Sure, this run came against Tulsa, but it was a special moment for TreVeyon Henderson as it broke the single-game freshman rushing record set by Archie Griffin in 1972. Henderson’s 277 yards and three touchdowns now stands atop the heap among Buckeye first-years, and Ohio State needed the record-breaking performance from Tre in this one in a sleepy 41-20 win over the Golden Hurricane. The 185 yards passing for C.J. Stroud was by far the lowest of his 2021 campaign, and the OSU defense allowed Davis Brin to throw for over 400 yards.

Ohio State Football Countdown: 51

One play or big moment per day as we count down to the start of Ohio State’s 2023 football season.

Play of the Day: Justin Fields’ 51-yard TD run vs. FAU (2021 2019)

Right from the jump, Ohio State fans had a ton of reasons to be excited about Justin Fields. He introduced himself to Buckeye Nation in a big way, ripping off a 51-yard touchdown run against Florida Atlantic for the team’s very first score of the 2021 2019 campaign. Fields finished the game with 234 yards passing and four TDs in addition to his score on the ground in a 45-21 win for Ohio State. Jeremy Ruckert hauled in two of those TD passes, while Chris Olave and Binjimen Victor split the other two.

Ohio State Football Countdown: 50

One play or big moment per day as we count down to the start of Ohio State’s 2023 football season.

Play of the Day: Michael Thomas 50-yard TD vs. Rutgers (2015)

Nobody thinks of Michael Thomas of a burner, but he had more than enough speed to outrun the Rutgers defense here on a 50-yard catch-and-run touchdown. It wouldn’t be the last long TD for the Buckeyes in the game, as Ezekiel Elliott’s 55-yard TD run put the capper on what would be a 49-7 win for Ohio State in 2015. Thomas led the way through the air with five catches for 103 yards and the score, while Zeke paced the ground game with 142 yards and two TDs. Quarterback J.T. Barrett put up five total TDs in the game — three passing and two rushing.
