One of my favorite plays ...

On a day which wasn't going our way, this tackle completely changed the game.

Bobby Carpenter

Bobby is yet another Buckeye that does not have "All Big Ten" on his resume (2nd team). He was the 3rd Big Ten linebacker taken in the NFL draft (18th pick).
The Ped State LB that was first team All Big Ten ahead of Bobby was a Junior who would go on to be the 34th pick in the following year's draft. Draft status isn't everything, but I think all Buckeye fans felt that Bobby was robbed.

I could be mistaken, but I think Bobby is giving that kid a Dutch rub.

Captain and Holder of a Record that is unlikely ever to be broken (see above)
Gary Williams

I cut out the picture to save space, and it turns out that's where the record is mentioned: Williams caught a pass in 48 consecutive games.

To me, this seems crazy that this would happen from 1979 to 1982. Basically, there weren't a lot of passes back then. By my count, he had 154 receptions in 48 games. I just wrote a quick Excel sheet that randomly picks a number between 1 and 48, 154 times. This means if you randomly spread out the catches amongst his 48 games, you can see which games were never randomly picked. I ran this simulation 150 times, and found that, on average, there were 1.9 games in this simulated dude's 150 careers where he did not make a reception. Out of 150 careers, in only 18 of them did he catch a pass in all 48 games. I'm sure there's a more mathematical way to calculate the odds, but I don't know it.

Note that this is taking the human heart out of the equation. If he had 44 consecutive games with completions, and in Game #45 he doesn't have a completion, maybe they called more pass plays to try to get his streak to continue. However, he only had 25 receptions in his first year - my simulation isn't broken down by year, but it lumped all 48 games into one pool. Getting a completion in all games his freshman year might be the more surprising fact. He probably had to fight for playing time, plus spreading 25 receptions throughout 12 games should probably mean a 0 would be expected in there, somewhere.

Vaughn Broadnax
In the I-Formation age, All-conference and All-American teams would feature two tailbacks and no fullbacks, even though every team had one of each. As a result, players like Vaughn would finish their career with no post-season honors. So in lieu of a resume, I offer the following:

Press Play

Of course the announcer (sounds like Al Michaels) says, "What a play by Schlichter". It was Vaughn that made that play. For decades afterwards it was known as "The Block"

Edit: With great sadness, I have to add that William passed from ALS on the day this was posted. This is the first time, to my knowledge, that a player passed away on his day in the countdown.
