The interpretation of targeting by referees continues to be the biggest joke in College Football. His reasoning for not calling it was because the receiver wasn’t defenseless, and didn’t use the crown of his helmet. Yet the defender lowers his helmet, and makes FORCIBLE contact to another player’s helmet. Seemed like a textbook call, and the refs failed. Again.

"Defenseless" receiver seems to be less about anything involving rigid interpretation and more about 'who' and the refs emotion behind the hit.

Last week I argued against the defenseless receiver flag thrown against the Colts for their hit on Justin Jefferson. Because the receiver made the decision to leave his feet, to go up for a ball that Kirk shouldn't have targeted him on (no surprise there) So in order to hit JJ legally and separate him from the ball, he would have to establish as a runner. Meaning the DB's would have to let him land on his feet, make a football move to establish, THEN hit him.

The counter to my point was someone saying that because the WR was in the air, it wasn't "necessary" for the DB's to endanger Jefferson by hitting him. The guy knowingly endangered himself by trying to climb the ladder. And per the usual, Vikings coaches came out in the media the next day with 'we're worried about the hits Justin is taking'. Not 'Why is Kirk hanging our guys out to dry'.

In 2022 we've turned an attempt at making the game a touch safer, by punishing defenses for bad reads and execution by QB's and WR's.
