2022/23 Bowl Game Discussion Thread

The targeting call on Bacon #3 from Bowling Green is exactly why the targeting rule needs a long going over.

NMSU QB is breaking down like he's about to put a move on the DB, then starts to give himself up at the last possible second. The refs first mindset is to throw laundry THEN review it.
Turns out, they didn't (rightly) charge the DB with targeting, but he still got a late hit. Which is, again, complete bullshit. Defender is in the act of tackling, offensive player gives himself up too late to prevent additional contact. Needs to be an "oh well", and move the fuck on. When this starts being applied appropriately, QB's will stop playing with fire for the sake of drawing a cheap call.
Change the uniforms, put it in Ohio Stadium and it looks like Crable's hit on Smith. Runner is out of bounds and the DB lights him up. It was a cheap shot then, it's a cheap shot. now.

It is what it is. Times change, people change. When I was at OSU we chanted "Rose Bowl!" during games. That was the goal - beat TTUN, win the B1G, win the Rose Bowl.

Where the voters put you after those games was secondary. No one was talking about "winning the natty" in those days. But that was almost 40 years ago. It is what it is.

It mattered to me whether tOSU won a national championship or not in the early to mid-70s. The path had to be winning The Game and going to the Rose Bowl. This was just when things changed to allow multiple Big Ten teams to go to Bowls, and was right after the major polls started having a final NC vote after the bowls were played.

I was never big on the ‘special’ quality of the Rose Bowl. I resented the tie-in that required tOSU to play a team from California, usually from LA, in order to win the Natty back then - it led to falling short after the ‘72, ‘74, ‘75, and ‘79 seasons. Sometimes a result in the Sugar, Cotton, or Orange would have assisted or prevented tOSU ending up #1, but I cared about all of those 4 major bowls, and sometimes wished tOSU could have been in a different one. The BCS solved that, and I was generally fine with it, although they would overreact as they tinkered with the formula.

I’m OK with 4 teams in the CFP, but hate the committee and the influence espn has on things. I think the 12-team playoff will seriously diminish the regular season, which has always been the best in any sport.

But the lost prestige of the Rose Bowl? This midwestern kid doesn’t give a damn about it. I’ve witnessed the Buckeyes losing there and winning there, but it’s just another bowl game that happens to have a great sunset late in the game.

Totally agree but I'd recommend anyone to go see a game there if you get a chance. It's just a very nice venue.

I don't think the national championship mattered to me when I was young because I had never seen the Buckeyes win one. I was alive in 1968 but not old enough to remember anything about it. During the 70s the Bucks kept finding ways to not win one so I never got my hopes up.

While a student in the 80s we were losing 3 games every year so an NC wasn't on the radar. Then we had the 90s, more wasted opportunities, so winning one never felt realistic until I actually saw it happen with Tressel, a coach who knew how to win titles. The Rose really hasn't felt relevant in decades, now.

These games are a good reminder that when I think the Buckeyes are playing “bad football”, there is a whole different level of bad football that exists.

Watching 6-6 teams make losing plays after losing plays - drops, fumbles, coaching decisions, penalties, situational awareness, etc etc. Just awful. Losers. I don’t know how fans of these teams survive but I guess it’s normal to them?

And I’m the biggest sucker for watching. At least this one is tied and entertaining.

The fuckery is part of the fun for me with these lower level games. Couldn't imagine being a fan of a team at this level but having watched enough, I think you would just get used to it.
