As for the positional group as a whole, we may need to pour a bit of cold water on the optimism here. Insiders have indicated we should temper expectations, and that the shuffling of positional battles may be weighing on the whole unit. Gattis mentioned in his golf outing interview in early August that they have "7 or 8 guys that we have that can really, really help us win". These battles seems far from settled and it may be hard for the group to gel until five are selected.

Sounds like the OL is going to be rough too. They have a "bunch of guys" but none of them can seem to do well enough to secure a starting spot. That's not good at all approaching 2 weeks until kickoff.

“Not as sharp as the original”.
In other words, Aidan Hutchinson =

It's the most wonderful time of the year; when the scUM Lollipop Guild (aka "Insiders" and blogs) pump the DFBIA full of optimism. Rainbows and lollipops for everyone!
Right now there pretty much seems to be agreement across the board that three starters have been sharpie'd in: Ryan Hayes at LT and Zak Zinter and Andrew Stueber at two OL positions To Be Named Later.
Ohio State OL: Should we move our All American LT with 33 career starts to LG to allow an even better player to have a spot on the OL?

Michigan OL: We've got three guys who can start. Don't know where, but they can start. The other two guys? Fuck if I know....
Much of the intrigue at the WR position after the first week of camp has centered on Daylen Baldwin, the FCS transfer Michigan got from Jackson State and someone I forgot about until like two weeks ago. If the buzz is any indication, I won't be forgetting about him again for some time.... There's unanimity about Ronnie Bell and Cornelius Johnson as the top two guys, but I can't help but wonder if some of the Baldwin hype is due to one of those two guys perhaps not quite being as sharp as had been expected.
Ohio State WR: We've got two first rounders and a five-star starting, and three five-stars on the second team.

Michigan WR: Our best WR is a transfer from Jackson State. The guys we've pimped for the past two seasons actually kinda suck.
THE MAZI SMITH HYPE TRAIN IS COMING TO A TOWN NEAR YOU.... Outside of Mazi, we're getting a taste of Ann Arbor's most sacred August tradition: Donovan Jeter hype.... Outside of Smith and Jeter, Jess Speight and Chris Hinton have been the next two to be mentioned, normally in tandem, and with not a lot of other specifics being provided.... The only mentions of Jordan Whitley [sic] have been from insiders describing him being a short yardage option at NT.
So five-star recruit (Hinton) and walk-on (Speight) battling for playing time behind guy who's done literally nothing (Smith) and a guy who's done figuratively nothing for four years (Jeter), while fat-guy-San-Jose-State-JUCO-Oregon-State-flop (Whittley) will be lucky to see the field at all.
The big story has been the rapid emergence of Nikhai Hill-Green, a sophomore LB who some sources are indicating has now moved past Michael Barrett into a starting role on the depth chart.... That the praise has fallen on NHG's shoulders doesn't mean that Josh Ross and Michael Barrett are bad, though.
NARRATOR: Actually, the praise that has fallen on NHG's shoulders does mean that Josh Ross and Michael Barrett are bad....
The vibes here [cornerback] are still not great
The vibes are still not great at CB ... and OL ... and DL ... and QB ... and WR ... and....
Brad Hawkins has been mentioned mostly in the Aidan Hutchinson vein of "veteran leader, known commodity", while Dax Hill discussion has centered on the possibility of him playing at multiple positions. Balas indicated this weekend that Dax is playing a significant amount of corner and that revelation is mostly the result of strong play from RJ Moten and Makari Paige allowing him to move around the field.
Translation: Brad Hawkins sucks for a record-setting sixth consecutive year, and five-star Dax Hill can't beat out a pair of journeymen.

Scrolling the comment section of that. One of them read that write up and came to this fucking conclusion

Keeping the D in DFBIA strong

Hearing that Hill has been able to freelance because of solid safety play from other guys is encouraging, especially Moten taking a step up. Feels like the secondary should be a strength of the defense.

I compare it to “barn-blindness” in the livestock-showing world.

That’s the term used when someone only works on their own animal for months on end and becomes convinced they have a great animal only to get boat-raced at the county fair and finish 7th in a class of 8.
Would that be like my wife thinking I am a pretty good looking guy?

Narrator: She does not.

Its the same slow defense that has gotten torched by anyone with any actual talent and speed. They think a new coach trying to jam square pegs into round holes is going to fix all of that though. Its gonna get a lot worse before it gets better. I cant wait to see this dude try to blitz a shit ton with nobody who has even remotely proven they can consistently get to the QB and a secondary that can't cover anyone to begin with. That's like playing the NCAA video game and blitzing 8 people every time just praying your opponent happens to fuck up a few times here and there.

I think they’re excited that they’ll at least have the opportunity to get burned in new ways with the possibility of zone coverage and zone blitzes being mixed in to disguise their overall slowness and lack of athleticism—Northwestern style.

Having converted DEs playing OLB and doing complicated things that will likely confuse and disorient their players still keeps the probability of being torched high, but DFBIA is just excited about the possibility of failing in ways outside of a slot receiver burning the safety in man coverage over and over and over.

You’ve opened my eyes. I always thought that phrase meant if you closed your eyes, you weren’t really having sex with animals.
