Naw, just an unfortunate coincidence. Out here on the Left Coast, the only info I get is from BP, 11W, etc, and mostly everyone knows before I do.....hate to see him go. Understand that when you get your chance, AND you hit it out of the park (MSU game), AND then you are relegated to the bench, maybe it's time to fold one's tent and seek greener pastures. Unfortunately, one of the downsides of lots of quality recruits. Wish him well, he seems to have his head on straight and is a hard worker. go Bucks!

RB07OSU's way too early offensive depth chart:

QB: Stroud, Miller, McCord (so tight here I think Stroud wins the nod to start mostly just on leadership with the other players, but really this is wide open and I can't wait for the spring game to see this battle)
RB: Teague, Henderson, M Williams, Chambers, Pryor (Teague will be listed starter probably all year if healthy and will get plenty of carries, but Henderson is going to explode onto the scene with the most touches on the backfield...Miyan is a stud too and rounds out most of the rest of the touches...barring injury, I don't see Chambers getting a ton of touches although he is talented...Pryor probably gets a RS)
WR: Olave, Harrison Jr., Scott (only doing a breakdown on this group because I think we get our best guys on the field... Olave and Wilson will be the top 2 WRs in the country this year, and where everything falls behind that is anyone's guess...I think Jameson and JSN become the clear 3 and 4, with Harrison Jr. knocking close on the door...Egubka makes a move and gets playing time...Babb becomes a face and name we know if he's healthy)
WR: Wilson, Babb, Fleming
WR: JSN, J Williams, Egbuka
TE: Ruckert, Stover, Royer (Ruckert is the best TE in the country and we better use him a ton... Stover is supremely athletic and seems to be coming along... loved Royer as a HA prospect, hope he starts developing)
OT: NPF, D Jones (obvious starters but Dawand might be the proverbial #6 that is the next guy up)
OT: Munford, P Johnson (I know Johnson is a starter but he's also the next up at OT with Wray transferring)
G: M Jones, Vimahi (I think Jones looked incredible last year and apparently is much improved, so he's my #5 to get our best 5 on the field...Vimahi has been impressing)
G: P Johnson, Fryar (PJ Sr is one of our best 5 and Fryar gives great depth)
C: Miller, Wypler (I think Miller is the most talented here to get the best 5 on the field, but Wypler seems to be the most natural center...we are set here)

“You want to be very fair and give them all a chance to develop, give them all a chance to be potentially the starter,” Wilson said. “They’re all in the mix, and they’re all going well, but they all got a lot of work to do. And it’s obvious they’re talented, but they need to play, and we just gotta keep battling through that.”

But until someone really puts themselves out in front of the other two, we’ll just keep going.”

"They are tasked with being obsessed with learning the offense and a lot goes with that," Day said. "They've got to get in the weight room with Mick (strength coach Mickey Marotti) and they've got to get stronger, they've got to get faster, they've got to get quicker. We grade our guys in there with Mick and we have a champions meeting right before the start of preseason camp and if you're 'gold' that means you're one of the top performers in the weight room. Now, that's the first thing they've got be able to do.

"But then, it's all the stuff off the field and outside of the weight room. Watching film, studying film, spending time in the Woody (Hayes Athletic Center) wearing out the X/O system. That's what they've got to do.

"As for their fluency of the offense, they're getting there, but they've got a long way to go. It was very basic during the spring and we worked on fundamentals and techniques. So, like I've said, we're playing catch up here. Obviously, we'd love to have somebody who is in year two or three here, but we don't have that luxury. So, we've got some young guys and they've got work to do.

"And so, it's a race to make up for time that we don't have. That's just the truth of it. We'd love to be practicing right now and all summer, but we can't do that. So, we need these guys to work on their own and maybe give them some worksheets to help guide them a little bit. But at the end of the day they have to be self-motivated."

Expectations Going In
The expectation going in was that Jeremy Ruckert would be fine but that it might be a while before somebody steps up behind him. Right guard Wyatt Davis had more receptions for Ohio State last year than any of the Buckeyes’ returning tight ends not named Jeremy Ruckert. Growing pains were going to be expected, but also from those pains some actual growth would be nice. Overall, this was a young group with differing skill sets so finding their respective roles would be a process.

Reality Coming Out
The reality coming out was that Jeremy Ruckert was fine and wasn’t stressed too much in practice because of his experience and maybe things aren’t progressing so slowly behind him. Redshirt sophomore Cade Stover showed impressive athleticism and hand-eye coordination in the spring game. Redshirt freshman Joe Royer scored a touchdown on a catch and run and is nearing the size and strength needed to play on the end of the line. Gee Scott wasn’t healthy enough to participate and Sam Hart is early on in his learning process. But having five scholarship tight ends and two walk-ons who have their own specific roles is a deep group to turn to if they’re ready.

Rewatched the spring game and while McCord is going to be a star, he's going to have to wait behind CJ. Incredibly compact release, live arm, accurate, and seems to have a pretty good command of the offense. I don't think the competition is over by any means, but a second watch makes me think CJ is the guy unless something dramatic happens in the summer.

I agree 100% with this. I thought Stroud showed livest arm, and made the best throws. Not to say the team wouldn’t unify behind McCord, but I think there’s also a reason Olave and Ruckert felt comfortable coming back.....I think Stroud was impressive in the reps he received last year in practice.

This will shake out interestingly. McCord could work and take it over before fall, but I think that's unlikely. He could continue working and take it over next year, but then he'd be unseating a proven starter. Does/will McCord want to wait two years behind Stroud with The Mighty Quinn coming in behind him? It could well end up with McCord having a Burrow-like run elsewhere.

Or McCord stays and fights for his spot. Things have a funny way of working their way out. And we have no clue how Ewers will do in college until he gets there. Its going to be a need to pump the brakes on Ewers until he's in college. Right now he's a great HS QB. It means nothing in college. Also, McCord can start one year and leave for the NFL and be a 1st round pick(Haskins, and could've happened to Cardale Jones).

Having the basic decision making down is a requirement for any quarterback. At Ohio State, and now especially under Day, the expectations are much higher than just a quarterback who can manage the basics. Yes, Day is working with inexperienced quarterbacks right now, but eventually the game managing will need to give way to play making.

“It’s our job as coaches to put them in a situation to be successful and to show the best version of them. But somewhere along the line, when the game’s coming down to the fourth quarter, we are going to have to make plays,” Day said. “It comes down to not just managing the game, that’s a big part of it, but if you want to go win the tough games and the tight games in the fourth quarter, you’re gonna have to make plays in a two-minute drill, throw really well in the red zone, and you’ve got to convert on third down.”

There will be growing pains for Stroud, Miller, and McCord, but fortunately for them they will be permitted to grow while distributing the football to what is arguably the greatest collection of skill talent in Ohio State history.
