Here is a couple novel, crazy ideas. How about we drop 8 in obvious passing downs? How about we drop our DE into coverage and bring the LB? How about we use some concept called the Rushmen package with JTT and Sawyer lined up over Gaurds? How about we stand up at least one, two, or hell even 4 guys in 3rd and long and let them move around before the snap? How about we do ANYTHING but line up 4 guys with their hands in the same exact piece of dirt and do the exact same thing on every snap? And heaven forbid we bring two LBs through the same gap, and I am not talking A gap, or bring more heat off the corner from (gasp) a DB.

Yes. All of this. Our 3rd down is terrible and has been since last season. We've got to do something different on 3rd down other than rushing 4 and playing man. I remember once Clemson brought all 4 LBs but dropped all 4 lineman in a zone blitz.

Even if we find something that works 1-2 times we've got to continue adding new packages.

I just don't get why on offense we are allowed to be exotic and have new wrinkles but on defense we insist on being simple. If the offense can be complex and play fast then the defense can do the same. It's like admitting we don't have the coaching chops to teach something complex.

That would've been something to think about before wasting a staff hire on a strictly special teams guy. Would've been nice to have 5 defensive coaches to teach more complex packages.

I'd like to see the personnel breakdown during those coverage changes. Happy they have some zone under looks coming but I'd like to know if that will be in nickel personnel or what they are going to do with the LBs in base 1 high. Guess we'll find out going forward.

We rarely rarely ever drop 8. I think I saw us do it once Saturday. I saw us drop a DE once. Bringing two LBs in the same gap is a very common blitz that we again rarely do, we like to bring our LB straight ahead through the vanilla A gap where it seems they get picked up a ton. We have very few exotic zone blitzes. If Sawyer is too weak, why are we lining him up over stronger Tackles then? And if not Sawyer, how about a Rushmen package where we take two DTs out and replace them with someone that can move, kind of like when we added Browning to the Dline and moved a DE down. Anything but the BS we watch on a regular where they get zero pressure. And standing guys up and moving them around before the snap is nothing new, teams have done it for years and it can be effective. We have done it before. When they stand up and move at least it isn't the same old predictable crap that hasn't worked.

Are you good with what we do now?

The point is a lot of people complain about things that we’re already doing and/or expecting to do things outside of the framework of the defense. You don’t remember Jacolbe Cowan getting left in the dust because he was slow to his drop?

At 1:36, the second UGA player went thru the wrong gap. He tried to fix it at the last second. He was supposed to go between 65 & 56. At 8:18, nobody ran thru the same gap. At 11:00, they both ran thru both A gaps. The OC vacated his area so it looked like one gap, but it was two. Just an FYI, no player is ever coached to run directly behind his teammate into the same gap. You’re asking to be gashed.

I played some LB in college, we absolutely overloaded gaps with the multiple players. Zone blitzes. Out number the offense. The likely hood of getting gashed on 3rd and long is minimal hence the perfect time to call those.

We gave up 500+m yards to Tulsa and you are okay with that?

I am complaining about the lack of imagination, the lack of creativity, and the lack of pressure we are getting on the QB. We are predictable and doing the same stuff every week. OC's are eating our lunch because of it, even lowly offenses like Tulsa are putting up 500 plus. Broadcasts are politely pointing out how vanilla and simple it is. Everyone on twitter is breaking down the defense and pointing out how inadequate the scheme is.

What are your suggestions?

Not exactly... sometimes teams will send 2 through the same gap. 1st is basically a sacrifice to the 2nd rusher who's meant to get home. It's not common but it's not a bad idea.

Asking to be gashed? Sure. Then again if you're rushing for -2 yards in game you can take that kind of risk.

I'm not totally convinced they've found all the right pieces yet. Kam and Burke seem to be in place, I kind of think everything else besides Haskell is up in the air....

You keep saying I’m okay with it and I’ve already said I’m not. Barnes made some changes and called different coverages. I’m good with that. I’ve said in other threads that predictability with man coverage is an issue. I’m speaking directly to you complaining about them not doing things that they have done already and/or things that clearly are not a solution.

You can see him directly try to jump back into that gap.

Also, all the best OSU defenses in the last 10+ years have been simple “predictable” defenses that the guys execute well. But the callers have added variations. Coombs hasn’t done that.
