Everybody is somebody else's weirdo.
Due to the lack of depth, the Buckeyes’ linebackers are being asked to be as versatile as possible.
“Yeah, that’s what you have to do,” Coombs said. “We have to be prepared. And we went through this whole process last year with the COVID world where guys had to be versatile and they had to know and learn more than one position. I think we talked about that at length and we coached them that way. The difference was last year we were trying to do that in a remote environment and trying to get guys ready to play different spots and it’s more challenging.
“So, I think this year, that’s exactly where you find yourself. If you have an area of depth and then an area where you don’t have as much depth, then you may have to borrow from one to the other to get your best guys on the field and allow them to play. But I also don’t want to (hold back) anybody’s learning process by moving them wholeheartedly or wholesale to a new spot if we can continue to teach him and coach him in more than one spot and allow them to be versatile. I think we’re better that way. And I think it prepares us for a long season that way.
“So, I would say that we’re going to fight the temptation to put anybody in a specific box and try and use a really quality coaching staff to coach guys in different roles.”
