2021 Fall Camp and Other Tidbits

I continue to see people fret about the pass defense. I continue to see anxiety about whether Coombs can fix the pass defense.

Please relax. Fixing a pass defense is easy. All one has to do is have a worse run defense, starting with all new LBs, a significant departure on the DL, and losing a DL recruiting battle.

No problem.

The main theme of the article is obviously on Day; however, some good tidbits from the assistant coaches too:

Because the reviews are largely based on the happenings of the 2019 season, here are some abbreviated highlights of the various reviews.
  • Mark Pantoni gave himself three personal goals for 2020-21:
    1. “Bring in a top recruiting class that fits the STRONG culture of our locker room”
    2. “Continue to be innovative and creative with our social media team (graphics, videos, branding)”
    3. “Make sure we have the most organized and comprehensive on-campus visits for prospects and their families”
  • Greg Studrawa was proud of his line's on-field production, writing that “players really came together as a unit,” and he thought he was “doing well” in recruiting but "must maintain momentum.”
  • Larry Johnson gave himself a 5 out of 5 in terms of his overall rating as a coach and wrote one goal: “To continue to enhance my development as a coach!”
  • Kevin Wilson wrote that the right ends were the “best academic unit on team.” His evaluation of his own 2019-20 season as a coach: "Good year, continue to grow + lead, get a championship.”
  • Tony Alford gave his overall performance a 4 out of 5 but rated his productivity in recruiting a 2 out of 5 last summer, marking the lowest self-reported grade among the coaches. That came after Ohio State missed out on several top targets at running back in the recruiting class of 2020.
  • Brian Hartline wrote down three goals:
    1. “Win the rivalry game, Big Ten championship and the national championship”
    2. “Removing all doubt of WRU”
    3. “Unit GPA 3.0”
  • Corey Dennis wrote that he was “looking forward to growth as a coach.” Among the areas to work on listed on his performance review: “Recruit best QB in country,” which he's currently in position to do for the 2022 class with Quinn Ewers.
  • Kerry Coombs included coaching the “top defense in country” in a section of what he wanted to work on prior to Ohio State struggling mightily to defend the pass last season.”

With so many questions from last years' D, I really expect more freshmen this year to make serious impacts than most other years if not all. When you start recruiting like we are I think this is going to start being more common.

And where will those Frosh play? Every position on defense has an upperclassmen in place. The only position I could see thats up in the air is slot CB or maybe a LB spot. But because we were so bad on defense last year due to no off season, I see all getting a mulligan. Again, we had one of the worst defenses in years, and still got to the NC! That says A LOT!

They'll make noise on all three levels in my opinion. That doesn't mean they will all come in and start but there will be playing time for some of them. They're just too good

I definitely can buy into mulligans, last year might have been a fluke. That said, I think Sawyer for sure on the DL will play and play a lot., he's just too good. At LB, I think playing time will be scarce, we have some talent there. DB will be interesting. I think someone like Hancock or JK can push immediately at CB, and could supplant a guy like Williamson in the rotation. But I think Banks solidifies himself as a true stud #1 CB, Proctor will be solid at bare minimum at safety, and Ransom finds his way on the field because of his talent. That's 3 and I think there's plenty of guys like Brown and Martinez on the roster that can step up and be good, but the incoming class could make some noise at DB.

I think Watts will make some serious noise at CB

Forgot about him and Cavazos now that you bring it up. Watts in particular seems to be catching everyone's attention. That said, I think, and hope, that Hancock and JK push for playing time and step up our secondary. Steel sharpening steel, or something like that.

The good thing is, even if one of them has to RS,I see that as a plus, because it would tell us that they weren’t NEEDED just yet to play and can refine their skills for another year and the guys we do have are ready and pass the Coombs standard
