Michigan-Belleville problems cost us 5 star Damon Payne
Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on May 26th, 2020 at 12:09 PM

According to Sam on the Inside Michigan Recruiting podcast latest episode, the tension between the coaches from Michigan and Belleville “for sure” has had a negative effect on Damon Payne’s recruitment and is why he is leaving MI to play college football.

Payne is a 5 star #1 DT nationally, #1 player in MI. Consensus seems to be that he’s heading down South but OSU is listed as warm on his 247 profile.

The whole thread is pretty good, but hilarious that Harbaugh's personality (or lack thereof) cost Michigan even getting a look from a elite player at probably their position of most need in their own state.

This hot take is my favorite

Because our boosters arent as insanely football obsessed as those in the south. Rashan got extra benefits to come here. He didn't get as many benefits as he would have had he went to Clemson. There have been plenty of rumblings that Payne is looking for the highest bidder out of the SEC.

"Well yea Michigan gave him illegal benefits, but NOT AS MUCH AS CLEMSON WOULD HAD GIVEN HIM!"....... we didnt cheat as bad is a strange moral high ground, very DFBIA.

Some more fun recruiting hot takes from the DFBIA. Some of the crowd would rather have 3 star "around 50th in the state" rated players from Florida than a 5* from about anywhere else. Based on 2014......and probably based on that being about all they can get these days. Just pretend you "really didnt want" the highly touted guy.

Let me go check out Florida's #48-52 recruits from 2014, since Jaydon Hood is #48 in Florida.

48. Nigel Bethel (transferred, never did much)
49. Quincy Wilson (2nd round)
50. Isaiah Ford (7th round)
51. Brandon Powell (UDFA)
52. Mike Smith (undrafted)

Hmph. Well, I guess that supports my point. Michigan can go to Florida, stumble into some mid-level recruits, and come back with just as much production as if they stayed in the state and got the top 5 guys.

We won't know if it cost us anything for another 3-4 years. Count me in the crowd that will be happy with a lower ranked recruit who plays better competition in high school, than one who is highly rated against lower competition.

ttun under harbaugh has yet to lose fewer than 3 games, has yet to beat their archrival, has only once finished better than 3rd in the b1g east, is 1-4 in bowl games, and has yet to finish with a single-digit ap ranking... but they're as close as anyone can possibly be to a national title?

i was once a couple states over from ana de armas. i was as close as anyone can possibly be to having sex with her.
