Zach was the last fullback Ohio State had. Fittingly, when the changing times eliminated the position, Zach finished his career in another. In his new position, he made his most memorable plays, including the one that resulted in the iconic photo above.

As I remember, it wasn't so much the loss of the fullback position as it was the lack of LBs. Graduation, the pros, and injuries left the Bucks with Shazier and three guys named Moe. Never more obvious than the 2011 game when the bucks had to play Ryan with one good leg throughout the 4th quarter because he was better on one leg than the others on two. Next season, Zach stepped in and looked like he'd been playing there for years. Correct me if I'm wrong.

It was definitely the hole at linebacker that precipitated the change. It was the absence of a fullback role in Urban Meyer's offense that made Zach available for the change.

(He was the 3rd Big Ten linebacker taken in the NFL draft (18th pick))
Bobby Carpenter

The Ped State LB that was first team All Big Ten ahead of Bobby was a Junior who would go on to be the 34th pick in the following year's draft. Draft status isn't everything, but I think all Buckeye fans felt that Bobby was robbed by any standard.
