2020-2021 Ohio State Men's Basketball (Official Thread)

A lot of good things happened, like the run in the B1G tourney, but this season will only be remembered for how it ended.

Bucks made history today, but in a bad way.
Maddeningly inconsistent team. Looked like world-beaters and a potential Final Four team the first couple of weeks of February, then they slumped badly. Even when they put it together for 3 big wins in the B1G tourney, those included some incredibly frustrating second half meltdowns that nearly lost them. Then an absolute clunker today.

Holtmann needs to figure out how to balance the troughs and ridges with his teams. Seems like they've been really streaky each year.

Purdue won 2 of 3 vs the Buckeyes, and we needed OT to get that win.

North fucking Texas beat Purdue in the first round. Looks like the B1G, nor the Buckeyes, were as good as we thought.

And yet Rutgers, one of the few B1G teams we swept and handled easily this season, beat the higher seeded Clemson and advances. We beat Wiscy at their place, Wiscy who went 0-9 against teams that finished ahead of them in conference, and Wiscy blew out UNC to advance.

Not saying the B1G wasn't overrated, but also the B1G beat each other up and some of its teams are healthier and fresher at the right time. And also just that March Madness is Madness because there's not a lot of rhyme or reason to it if you're trying to judge the overall quality of teams or what they did that season relative to each other. It's just match-ups and who played a good game in that moment to continue their season or a terrible one to end it. The latter being us yesterday, unfortunately.

This season was the best of times, and the worst of times. Everyone has pointed to why tOSU lost to Oral Roberts, no need to rehash that. It appeared to me that every reason that tOSU lost a game this year was all present in this game. I get that the bitter taste is what one remembers, but there is much to be celebrated as well. First of all is the individual growth of players. Believe that many if not all got better this year. EJ, Zed, Duane, Sueing, CJ, Kyle, Meechie, Musa, Justin, all showed positive signs of getting better. EJ's O, Justin's D, Duane's shot selection, CJ's generalship, Kyle's hard play, all made up for a good to great year. Holtmann's coaching job (plus the assts am certain), all played a part in this. tOSU beat every B10 team this year. Ever been done, probably once or twice. Bball is a game of streaks, and tOSU's cold streak (losing four regular season games in a row), hot streak (winning three games in tournament and taking Illinois to OT), was followed by a cold game against Oral Roberts. Unfortunate, but probably more hard to swallow for our players than for Buckeye Nation. After all, we're merely spectators, arm chair coaches if you please, and they are the front line warriors that do it. Feel particularly for CJ and Kyle, who may or may not return next year. Also for EJ, who has been the target of several/many (?) idiots that have put the burden of this loss on his shoulders in a reprehensible manner. Here's hoping that however, by whomever can do it, to trace these e-mails/tweets etc back to the perpetrators for justice.

There are too many positives from this season to relegate it simply to a loss. Tired legs, over confidence, missed free throws, cold shooting, lack of D, lack of other scorers, you name it. It happened. When confronted at the water cooler on Monday, merely grin and agree it was an unexpected loss. Shake your head a little if you wish. The sun did in fact rise today, as normal. Buckeye basketball will continue to get better, just as football will after the game against Alabama. Rest easy Buckeye Nation, we will rise again.

Buckeyes are gonna go at least 9 years between Sweet 16 appearances. That's really bad for a program that likes to claim that National titles are their goal.

We do that in basketball? If people are doing that, they should take a closer look at our history.

1 national title in 122 years of basketball. It was won 61 years ago, so we were due this year. Now we'll have to wait until 2082. Damn.
