Villanova tops college basketball's Way-Too-Early Top 25 for 2020-21

We're entering an offseason of uncertainty in college basketball. Not only is there trepidation on the part of potential NBA draft early-entrants and athletic directors looking into making coaching changes, but it's also impossible for coaches to go out and recruit the final players in the 2020 class. Moreover, we could see transfer eligibility rules changing in the near future.

In other words, rosters could look dramatically different a few months from now -- or there could be much less turnover than we're used to.

Either way, here's our first guess at the landscape of the 2020-21 season. We're going to constantly update this throughout the offseason as players declare for the draft and transfers and recruits make decisions. The most likely outcome in terms of early-entry players is factored into the rankings.

Which Ohio State will show up next season? The one that started 11-1 and sat near the top of the rankings? Or the one that lost six of seven to drop to 2-6 in the Big Ten -- or the one that won nine of its last 12? I think it's something more like the third option, even though there are some personnel issues entering the offseason. One of those was addressed over the weekend, when Harvard graduate transfer Seth Towns -- our No. 1 transfer -- picked the hometown Buckeyes over Duke. Towns will add perimeter shooting, while California transfer Justice Sueing brings scoring punch after sitting out last season. C.J. Walker, Duane Washington and Luther Muhammad are all back in the backcourt. What happens up front? If Kaleb Wesson turns pro, coach Chris Holtmann could be short on interior options. If Wesson returns, Ohio State will rise several spots in the rankings.

i think most iowa fans are expecting that garza will return. that might be foolish optimism, but there does seem to be some smoke that garza will surprise like cassius winston did. probably won't hear anything for at least 6 weeks if the workouts go as scheduled. kaleb might be on the same wait-and-see timeline.

anyway, though the rosters will stay in flux for at least a couple months, i still see the big ten returning another strong conference. osu, wisconsin, msu, ttun, and iowa all look like contenders if a few key players stay in college. illinois and maryland should still be solid. rutgers, indiana, and purdue will prove to be valuable road wins.

if the b1g retains just some of the talent that is currently considering the draft, then i think we'll see pretty close to a repeat of 2019-20 in terms of quality depth. we were the best conference last year and we weren't even all that experienced. few conference teams have been gutted.

I guess you assume one thing and I assume another I do not think that there has to be a predraft camp for scouts to see what a college player can do I think they see them play quite a few games during the college season I do not care what you have seen in any draft projections Garza was probably the best skilled big man in the Big Ten this past season and this is just my opinion you have yours

They rank Garza as 86th and Kaleb as 55th among potential draftees, for what that's worth.

thanks that is really surprising to me I am a Buckeye fan but if I had a choice I know which player I would take

Edit: I guess I should do some research before I post my thoughts the majority of the scouts think that he would have to play the #4 position at the professional level and that is why is draft stock is lower

To be clear, I didn't assume one way or the other. I was asking why you assumed it because I really haven't seen any speculation about him leaving. Really good college player who probably isn't athletic enough for today's NBA.

First off, I hope you are all doing well and staying safe as we shelter ourselves away from COVID-19. Like all of us, I am looking forward to getting back to watching sports in the present rather than living in the past. In the spirit of contemplating that future, here is a way-too-early bracket for the 2020-2021 season. After all, it is only 340 days to selection Sunday.

Of course, we still do not know everyone who is going off to the NBA early or transferring to other schools. Just in the last few days since I started on this bracket, Cassius Stanley (Duke), Jalen Smith (Maryland), Tyrese Maxey (Kentucky) and Kofi Cockburn (Illinois) are among those declaring for the NBA Draft.

With all of the departures and additions to the Buckeyes’ roster this offseason, it’s a bit hard to get a grip on just how well the team will perform in 2020. Joe Lunardi must like what Chris Holtmann has done with the roster, as after having Ohio State listed as a No. 5 seed in his initial rankings, he has bumped them up to a No. 4 seed in his latest update.

Ohio State moves up in Joe Lunardi's latest ESPN bracket projections

Joey Brackets is a year-round phenomenon. You may not have noticed that he publishes his NCAA Tournament bracket projections year-round prior to all the stay-at-home orders, but he’s been doing it for years. He just released his latest projections on ESPN and has Ohio State on the move upward on the seed line.

Last time we checked in, the expert “bracketologist” had the Buckeyes as a No. 5 seed. Now, after thinking things through apparently, Lunardi has decided to move OSU up one spot to a No. 4 seed, and has placed it in the East against No. 13 seed Belmont. Tennessee and Kentucky both moved down a line to a No. 5 seed, and that’s most likely the reason for the upward movement.

If this bracket were to hold true, Ohio State would be in the same bracket as No. 1 seed Villanova and No. 2 seed Duke. This will all change, but Lunardi has the Buckeyes playing out of Providence.
