2020-2021 College Basketball Discussion (Official Thread)

7 records that could be broken in the 2020-21 college basketball season

1. Consecutive 30-win seasons

Record: Four — Kansas (2010-13), Villanova (2015-18), Gonzaga (2017-present)

Gonzaga (31-2) finished the 2020 season with more wins than any other program in the country and tied for the fewest losses in the country. The Bulldogs' WCC tournament win over San Francisco in the semifinals of the tournament marked their 30th of the season and allowed Gonzaga to tie Kansas and Villanova with its fourth-consecutive 30-win season, a Division I men's basketball record.

That makes Gonzaga on the precipice of an NCAA record, if the 'Zags can reach 30 wins again in 2020-21. It could be more difficult than usual, since college basketball teams are limited to 27 regular-season games and if Gonzaga wins the WCC regular season championship again, the 'Zags would only have the chance to play two games in its conference tournament. That means that even if Gonzaga only has two or three losses on Selection Sunday, the team might need to make the Elite Eight or Final Four in order to reach 30 wins.

But Mark Few's squad is certainly capable of such a run as Gonzaga made the national championship game in 2017, the Elite Eight in 2015 and 2019, and the Sweet 16 in 2016 and 2018.

Just sayin': Gonzaga did it, 5 consecutive seasons (and counting) with 30 wins.

Roy Williams retires at UNC. Chris Beard goes from Tech to Texas.

North Carolina's 10 best candidates to replace Roy Williams after his retirement

Hubert Davis, UNC assistant coach

Wes Miller, UNC-Greensboro coach

Billy Donovan, Oklahoma City coach

John Beilein, Big Ten Network analyst

Porter Moser, Loyola coach

Jerry Stackhouse, Vanderbilt coach

Kenny Smith, TNT analyst

LeVelle Moton, North Carolina Central coach

Chris Holtmann, Ohio State

Holtmann is another candidate who will come up for openings, and it's based on his immediate impact at Ohio State. The Buckeyes have won 20-plus games each of the past four seasons, and Holtmann does have in-state experience with his stint at Gardner-Webb. Holtmann is one of the better major-conference candidates worth taking a look at.

Jerod Haase, Stanford coach

FYI there is a Roy Williams thread. It probably would be more appropriate to put this stuff in that thread

Oklahoma hiring Loyola Chicago's Porter Moser to replace Lon Kruger as Sooners coach

Oklahoma will hire Loyola Chicago coach Porter Moser to the same position at its program to end a formal coaching search that lasted only a week after the retirement of legendary Sooners coach Lon Kruger, CBS Sports Matt Norlander confirms.

OU athletic director Joe Castiglione flew to Chicago Thursday, a source told CBS Sports' Matt Norlander, and met with Moser to get the deal done. The sides agreed in principle Friday to a six-year contract, according to Norlander. The hiring was originally reported by multiple media sources including Stadium's Shams Charania.

Guess he didn’t care to stay and watch the Cubbies.

Interesting career as a coach. Flamed out at Illinois State, mostly average at Loyola but lucked into 2 tournament runs (is the Sweet 16 a “run”?).

Not sure this moves the needle for Oklahoma.

Maryland has landed commitments from two highly-coveted transfers in 5-10 PG Fatts Russell from Rhode Island and 6-11 Qudus Wahab from Georgetown. Russell led Rhode Island in points (14.7) and assists (4.5). Wahab averaged 12.7 points and 8.2 rebounds. Made the Big East all-tournament team. Maryland just got a lot tougher for next season.
