2020-2021 College Basketball Discussion (Official Thread)

I believe my views on college basketball team quality are on the inclusive side for the tournament. IMO, there are usually about 60-70 pretty good college basketball teams every year. There are no viable, nationally competitive teams past the top-100. Including the 15- and 16-seed minnows already lowers the quality of teams in the tournament. Inclusion of all of these teams is idiotic.

The ACC, led by Coach K, is proposing all 350+ teams be included in the next NCAA tournament.

I fail to see how the inclusion of 200+ bad college basketball teams is going to help the tournament.

It enables all schools to get a piece of the pie. The likelihood of a full regular season is slim, and athletic programs are already suffering because Covid.

SKULL SESSION: BIG TEN VOTE COULD COME WITHIN THE NEXT FEW DAYS, JOEY BOSA SPITS A LITTLE TRASH TALK AT JOE BURROW, AND THE NCAA TOURNAMENT ISN'T EXPANDING

FALSE ALARM! The ACC coaches may think a 300+ team NCAA Tournament sounds like a killer idea, but it would seem that the NCAA ain't exactly sold.

So turns out, everyone's online meltdown was just a bit premature. Who would have thought?!

Personally, I was fine with the proposal. Given how enormously shitty this year has been, there are worse things in life than somebody trying to give me five times as many NCAA Tournament games.

Greg Marshall......completely unhinged

https://www.cbssports.com/college-b...igation-into-conduct-of-coach-gregg-marshall/

Among the allegations in the report include shoving former player Shaq Morris in the back; punching Morris between the shoulders near his neck; and attempting to punch a student through the driver's window after the student parked in Marshall's reserved parking spot. His treatment of individuals in and around the program has also raised alarms, per the report, and his on-court behavior has caused him problems in the past as well.

Stadium's Jeff Goodman reported Thursday night that Morris said he was punched twice by Marshall during a 2015 practice, and that Marshall is also accused of choking assistant coach Kyle Lindsted the following year. Stadium also reports that Marshall "routinely physically and verbally abused members of the program and demeaned his players with ethnic and racial slurs."

Dude's motto was "play angry" - and that is 100% true.

I heard he took the motto too far, and wanted to always be angry. Marshall also asked his team to pray angry. Yes, a lot of usage of the Lord's name in vain. For example, they would shout exclamatory prayers such as "God damn our opponents today" and "Jesus Christ deliver us a f-ing win" before each game.

But seriously, this guy should be fired yesterday. There is no excuse to punch your players. The only reason he still has a job is nobody really cares about Wichita State and so the media doesn't give the story continued attention. In Wichita,, the scrutiny basically stops after 24-48 hours.

Penn State Coach Pat Chambers Resigns After Investigation

Penn State's Pat Chambers has resigned following an internal investigation into allegations of inappropriate conduct by the Nittany Lions' basketball coach.

Penn State’s Pat Chambers has resigned following an internal investigation into allegations of inappropriate conduct by the Nittany Lions’ basketball coach.

Chambers, 49, had been at the school for nine years and was coming off the team’s best season under his directions.

Penn State athletic director Sandy Barbour said in a statement that assistant coach Jim Ferry was being elevated to interim coach for the coming season. NCAA basketball season starts Nov. 25.

Chambers was in the middle of a four-year contract with Penn State that runs through 2021-22 season. He was 148-150 with Penn State, including an NIT championship in 2018.

Penn State finished 21-10 record last season and was likely to earn an NCAA Tournament berth for the first time since 2011 before the postseason was canceled because of the pandemic.

Earlier this year, former Penn State player Rasir Bolton, now at Iowa State, made allegations of inappropriate conduct by Chambers to ESPN's “The Undefeated.”

Bolton said during a particularly difficult stretch for the team in January 2019, Chambers told him: “I want to loosen the noose that’s around your neck.”

Chambers apologized for the comment.

Penn State said in its statement new allegations surfaced shortly after the story and a review was conducted jointly by Penn State’s Affirmative Action and Athletics Integrity offices.

Worried about COVID in South Dakota, the Utah Utes have pulled out of the 8-team event, the same exempt tournament that OSU is participating in. Reporter Jeff Goodman has suggested South Dakota State is likely to take the Utes' place in the tournament.

What I do not understand is that South Dakota is one of the states that if you are from Ohio upon return you must quarantined for 14 days supposedly. I wonder how they're going to work that. I also doubt if Utah is the last team to pull out of that tournament.

Just sayin': Dropped to #23, I guess the good news is that they are still in the top 25. However, with basketball polls it doesn't make any difference where you start, the only important poll is where you finish.

NCAA in talks to hold entire men's basketball tournament in Indianapolis

Due to challenges associated with the coronavirus pandemic, the entire 2021 NCAA men's basketball tournament will be played in one location, the NCAA announced Monday.

The NCAA said it is in talks with Indianapolis and the surrounding metro area to be that location.

The decision comes after NCAA officials met to consider a variety of contingency plans. The move means that 13 sites across the country will no longer host a preliminary round of the NCAA tournament.

"My committee colleagues and I did not come lightly to the difficult decision to relocate the preliminary rounds of the 2021 tournament, as we understand the disappointment 13 communities will feel to miss out on being part of March Madness next year," said Mitch Barnhart, chair of the Division I Men's Basketball Committee and University of Kentucky athletic director, in the announcement. "With the University of Kentucky slated to host first- and second-round games in March, this is something that directly impacts our school and community, so we certainly share in their regret. The committee and staff deeply appreciate the efforts of all the host institutions and conferences, and we look forward to bringing the tournament back to the impacted sites in future years."

The NCAA's announcement said that sending teams across the country could create logistical challenges while also posing a risk of spreading COVID-19. It has been clear in recent months that the NCAA would do whatever it felt necessary to host the NCAA tournament. Last year's cancellation cost the NCAA $375 million.
