Nick Saban says Tua Tagovailoa a 'game-time decision' against LSU

Alabama coach Nick Saban said quarterback Tua Tagovailoa will be a "game-time decision" when the No. 2-ranked Crimson Tide host No. 1 LSU on Nov. 9.

Saban said on the SEC teleconference that Tagovailoa, who had surgery to repair a high ankle sprain 10 days ago, is progressing well in his recovery and is expected to practice on Wednesday for the first time since the injury.

"He'll be a game-time decision based on how he progresses," Saban said.

Hopefully when he plays is a "medical decision" (i.e. made by a medical professional) and not a "coaches decision". Tua Tagovailoa is projected as a top NFL draft pick; so we're talking about millions of dollars here. If the doctors clear him to play, all risks (if any) associated with his injury should be explained to Tua and his parents* who should also be in agreement to allow him to play, etc.

* and yeah, I know Tua is over 18 and no longer a minor.

If I were Tua, no matter what the Bama doctors tell me, I'm having my own doctors confirm any diagnosis of "you're clear to play".

Minnesota currently is a 6.5-point home dog to Penn State. That line looks just right to me. They'll kick off at 12 noon in Minneapolis and their game will be followed by the game of the season: Alabama - LSU. It's the first time that two games featuring 8-0 teams will happen on the same day in AP Poll history.

P.J. Fleck says Minnesota didn’t avoid night game vs. Penn State

After getting a bye week to rest and prepare for their next game, Minnesota is set to host Penn State in a somewhat surprising battle of unbeaten teams. But with the calendar flipping to November and night games generally frowned upon around the Big Ten this time of the year due to the weather conditions, Minnesota’s historic clash with the Nittany Lions will be slotted at noon eastern on Nov. 9. Minnesota head coach P.J. Fleck said in an interview with Pat McAfeee that the Gophers did not turn down a night game, as had previously been reported.

“No, we did not avoid that game,” Fleck said when asked about Minnesota turning down a night game opportunity. “That’s completely a hundred percent inaccurate. The way the Big Ten works is both teams have to be able to agree on night games and you have to be able to match it up with television, but that is a hundred percent inaccurate. The Minnesota Golden Gophers did not turn down a night game.”

.
Fleck’s statement contradicts previous reports citing Minnesota Deputy Athletics Director John Cunningham of saying Minnesota did indeed decline a night game option for the game against Penn State.

that rule is completely baffling to me that the teams get an actual vote in what time game starts.

i’m accustomed to just being told (with no vote) what time is kick off.

Just sayin': :mock:...At a lot of schools the football coach would be in "deep shit" for basically calling the AD (even the deputy) a liar. Fleck should have just avoided answering by saying the question should be referred to the school's AD office for any clarifications needed on that issue .

i mean i get it, it’s because of what the weather could be up there.

so now i’m jealous, and wish we had the option to NOT play day games until November for basically the same reason (weather).

The Big Ten previously had a no night game November policy league wide up until a few years ago.

Can say from experience, even 3:30 kicks got miserable quick when the sun fell below the press box during the half time show and the wind picked up. Mid-afternoons in Ohio in November are uniquely unpredictable.

PITA to dress and prepare for. Could be 45 and sunny at kick and wind chills in single digits by the 4th Q. You’re either sweating your ass off until the sun goes down because you’re overdressed, or you’re a popsicle after sunset because you’re underdressed. Add rain and snow?

Can’t even imagine a night game outdoors in Minnesota in November.

now picture the polar opposite (weather wise) for Baton Rouge.

the entire reason LSU began their tradition of playing home games at night was the weather.

it’s freaking hot here typically until at least mid-season.

those August/September day time kickoffs are absolutely brutal. Especially if you’re on the East sideline and more than about a quarter of the way up, because the shadow never reaches you before the game ends.

the ‘08 opened vs App St (10:30am kick last Saturday in august) was so brutally hot i was buying $8.00 waters just to dump on my kids’ heads.

‘15 Auburn (2:30 kick off in early Sept) was also a scorcher. Temps on the field were hitting 120°

Bama-LSU is actually the least important game of the regular season, because the result is irrelevant and no matter who loses, as long as that team beats the teams they should and doesn't lose a second time, then they probably find a way to get argued into the playoff based on the so-called eye test. SEC fans will not allow a 1-loss LSU or Bama to be viewed as on par with a 1-loss Oregon or Oklahoma or Utah.
