2019 tOSU Defense (Official Thread)

I want to stay cautiously optimistic, but it's obvious how much the defense has improved with a better scheme. That Cincy offense would have put up some points and big plays on us last year. It's nice to be excited to watch our defense come out on the field instead of holding your breath and hoping for the best. Really hoping the Silver Bullets are back and here to stay.

Agreed. It’s just way more fun to watch a suffocating D, and is obviously a key to winning championships.

The D is absolutely loaded with talent and would therefore be unsurprising to see this team move to elite status by the end of the year if everything continues to gel. Early signs are very promising.

I can't recall laughing during a game because of our defense. Like they were so good the first 2 weeks, so stingy, and hit so hard I was literally giddy.

This very well could be the best offense we play until Maryland so I'm excited to see where we stand.

Statistically worse offenses than Cincy last year absolutely gashed our defense last year (Hello Maryland, Northwestern, Oregon State). While I'm trying to pump the brakes myself on calling this a Top 10 defense, it's clear the defense is at least not a total dumpster fire.

The thing is, you have to walk before you can run. And last year they couldn’t even walk, the crawled and stumbled. Now that this group of guys knows they can pitch a shut out it’s easier to get some swag about your game and start to run.

I've been around long enough to see more than one OSU team look unbeatable for large stretches, especially early, in a season only to have a fatal flaw finally exploited by a team good enough to do it late in the year.

Both FAU and IU had some success in the middle of the field with the short passing game.

Just keep in mind any team that can protect an accurate passer reasonably well and has some TE/big WR talent can be a threat to this defense. May not be many, or any, of those out there and it's hard to keep up with an offense like OSU's while dinking and dunking over the middle all day but just keep it in mind.

That's just it... who's got the offense to challenge?

I suppose Nebraska, PED, and Maryland have the best odds. The thing is can any of these teams consistently do it too?

I agree, however i keep reminding myself we’ve switched to primarily zone D which makes them more vulnerable to those dink and dunk. I dont love it but i’m learning to accept it for now. Tougher test are coming and we’ll just have to wait and hope until then

It's a good blend I think... a little confusing with their decisions on 3rd and long situations though.

Right before the half we had them 3rd and very long and we played man. They looped the ball up and IU got the first down. A play or two later they score on their trick play.

I would've figured a zone in that situation would've been smarter?

We still play a ton of man though.
