2018-2019 Ohio State Men's Basketball (Official Thread)

Unfortunately, I look up and down the roster and don’t see where the offense improves and points come from.
i agree with this. there are only two players who are expected with confidence to produce good numbers. we all know who those two are. and then there are three players who i think have immediate offensive ability to produce reliable points: woods, washington, and muhammad. each plays pretty much the same position, though, and that means at least some of their minutes will be shared. of course, two are freshmen, and how confident can you really be in two freshmen? andre is probably good for an average of 8ish points, but much of that will be due to his playing time. we'll see if he can become a consistent scorer. i have my doubts. other than that, points may be hard to come by. neither potter, young, ledee, jallow, nor ahrens strike me as guys who will be reliable producers or at least as guys with offensive punch.

i think we're going to (have to) hang our hats on tempo and defensive pressure. perhaps a huggins-like feeling to our team. we're probably a bit too young to be a team that hangs its hat on smart, error-free play. one thing i am going to be confident about in regards to this team heading into the start of the season is this: the buckeyes are going to be thoroughly conditioned.

One could easily argue that for the past several years Villanova has started five guys who play the same position.
villanova's top 6 last season were 6'3", 6'3", 6'5", 6'7", 6'9", and 6'9".

woods, washington, and muhammad are 6'3", 6'3", and 6'3". jackson could/should never be added to that lineup if you want better than inadequate defense. it may be workable, though, if you instead add andre and kaleb/ledee/young/potter to the aforementioned three. i'm sure ho1tmann is going to work through countless lineups early in the season. lord knows we're facing enough cellar-dwellers to experiment with every possible permutation.

MEANWHILE, IN SPAIN. The men's basketball team just got the hell out of Columbus, and America for that matter.

The team is on a trip to Spain, where they're playing three exhibition basketball games while seeing the country's beauty and experiencing the rich culture. Apparently, the trip also included losing in soccer to Spanish children on a Madrid sidewalk.

Personally, I would like them to play basketball. If there aren't videos of Micah Potter aggressively swatting a shot from a 7-year-old spaniard, what are they even doing in Spain?

The Buckeyes are getting warmed up, which took about 3 seconds in a gym with no AC and an exterior temperature of 100+ degrees.

Spain 2018-Day 4 Gameday No. 1, Buckeyes Down Generals
Kaleb Wesson led Ohio State with 20 points in a 93-61 win over the Madrid Generals Saturday. The game was the first of three the Buckeyes are playing during an 11-day trip through Spain.

The game time temperature was 100 degrees in a gym with no air conditioning. The Buckeyes started slow but took control early in the third quarter after leading 39-28 at the half. Wesson went 5-5 from the field in the second half to help the Buckeyes cruise.

...

Lane hit the first shot of the trip for the Buckeyes with a 3 from the left side. Andre Wesson finished with eight points and a couple nice driving second-half dunks. He also added five rebounds. Potter contributed six points and a game-high seven rebounds while Woods, playing in his first game at Ohio State since transferring from Wake Forest, added eight points and two boards. Jackson started hot with nine first-half points but did not score over the final 20 minutes.

Newcomers Luther Muhammad (12 points), Duane Washington Jr. (9 pts.), Justin Ahrens (9 pts.) and Jaedon LeDee (2 pts/3 rebs.) also got their first playing time in the Scarlet and Gray.

Ehhh...

Hard to judge when you can't even see a minute of what the competition looked like. In a video post-game interview on the OSU AD site Holtmann almost visibly scoffed at the quality of the opponent. He kind of chuckled and said the Madrid Generals had some "conditioning issues" that the Bucks were able to take advantage of.

Was being facetious at the expense of my own observation that this team doesn’t have a whole lot of pure offensive talent.

93 points in 10 minute quarters is good.

This trip is a good practice and cool for the kids. Won’t take much away from it.

(But when we beat Xavier in a closed scrimmage maybe people will pay attention this year...)
