2018-2019 Ohio State Men's Basketball (Official Thread)

It was noted in Duane's thread but I think a lot of these guys have hit a physical and mental wall. The young guys are in the middle of the grind now and have to figure out how to dig deep enough to break through. It's the nature of playing college athletics, its a 24/7 adjustment from AAU or High School. The BiG is also a different animal than other conferences and I really believe that the weather is a factor this time of year. Muscles and bones take a little more to get going and the guys who aren't used to it struggle for a minute.

I think they'll be fine. As soon as some of these shots start falling that energy will come back. This team can't win without that.

Four straight losses, 2-4 in conference, 10th in the B1G.

It's a shame KBD didn't stick around instead of playing in the G League as the Bucks have no one to replace him this season, but I know that's how it works these days. Sophomore 4 star recruit Musa Jallow hasn't even managed to crack the rotation. Disappointing.

I can't wait until we have somebody on the roster that will allow us to see a lot less of A. Wesson and Jallow. Neither of them should see more than 6-8 minutes a game on any team hoping to be nationally competitive. Woods is...well...not good. He's basically the really bad Kam Williams from 2017.

Quite frankly, this type of season was to be expected and that was before it looked like the B1G was the strongest P5 conference. I think we got spoiled a little by the strong early wins against UC and Creighton. Hope the team can find their footing but it’ll likely be a slog the rest of the way.
i am not surprised by the overall record and struggles, but i am dismayed by the team getting worse instead of better. of course, it may be that we're not getting worse so much as opponents have "gameplanned" us into submission and that we're not talented enough to execute the adjustments that the coaches want.

i'll also add what i stated a few times before the season started: those who predicted a tournament berth and a top-half conference finish were not giving enough credit to kbd, tate, and williams, while giving perhaps a little too much credit to coaching. heck, forget kbd and tate. how much would you rather have williams than woods right now?

Holtmann talked about how much film they'd been watching to go over their losses and prep for Maryland. Yet the same issues are the same issues. It's obviously not getting through to whoever is playing, though I admit (and Holtmann probably would too) the Jimmies and Joes he has just CAN'T do it.

I still expected him to find a way to at least keep the fundamentals he instilled at Butler, last year and the beginning of this season. Slightly alarmed at how poor the play is as the season unravels.

Talent influx helps, but really disappointed in the experienced guys this year.

The big difference between last year and this year? A true go to scorer. This year they are leaning on CJ (a JC transfer), a grad transfer from Wake Forest and Andre Wesson (Good ball player but he is limited on both ends of the floor, athletically). While it was fun to see the early season success, the youth and lack of scoring has been exposed. Also, other teams have caught up on the team's defensive tendencies and have exploited them.

This team has potential but are young and are further away from consistent success than I thought. At this point I want to see the team's resilience from the players and coaches. A long B1G season ahead for these guys.

posted this in the gamethread, too, maybe it should have gone here:

I have been skeptical of this team all season, and when it became apparent how good the B1G was, I had a suspicion we'd get chewed up. But for whatever reason I thought we'd grind this one out tonight. Maryland was simply better than us in every facet of the game, and I think there's probably a handful of other B1G teams we could say the same about, the Michigan teams definitely.

We've been spoiled in that it has been a long time since we've seen a Buckeye team with a distinct talent disadvantage against the whole top half of our conference (Thad's last couple years weren't so much the talent as the culture and effort level). Well, we are seeing it now. On paper this is the least talented OSU squad in ages and it's showing now that we're actually playing legit competition. It's also our misfortune that our really down talent year is aligning with the strongest B1G in quite a while.

I do think that in the long run a NIT bid--if we can manage that--might be more beneficial for this team and it's probably the most that they're gonna deserve by the time the B1G brutality ceases.

This is what is so frustrating about college basketball. KBD didn't even go in the 1st round so why come out ? If your a 1st rounder I get it if not then it makes no sense. So many guys from Kentucky leave early that have no business leaving early because they play at Kentucky but those at Ohio State should be sticking around unless your a lottery pick.

G league over your senior season I don't see how these guys prefer that unless they hate class that much.

I get a fan's frustration about not having KBD on this team and not seeing in in the NBA either, but he is on a 2-year guaranteed deal making over $800K this year.

Not having KBD isnt the problem. Every big time college hoops program has high turnover with guys who are NBA prospects. It's not restocking the cupboard that was the real problem, that is why Matta got fired, as Gene knew Matta wasnt getting any more KBD- or Tate-level talent to replace their losses, and you have to be ready and able to replace your stars regularly in CBB. They have no stars anymore and have a rebuilding year because Holt didn't fill the gaps very well with a short time period and a lot of replacements needed.

The 2018 class was good but not good enough, and I can't blame Holtmann too much.

We needed that rare grad transfer who was going to be a legit offensive contributor. I didn't think he'd be dynamic but I thought Woods would be our most reliable outside shooter, he did it at Wake in the ACC so it stood to reason that we could expect a similar performance here. Nothing doing.

Wish we could have got Ryan Taylor instead.

I feel like at this point CH has nothing to lose by turning to the freshmen for more minutes. The experienced starters aren't leading you to anything, and especially at guard they arent playing smart or effective enough to help you win games in a tough B1G. Would like to see somewhat larger roles for Washington, Ahrens, and Ledee to see if they can make a difference.
