2018-2019 College Basketball Discussion (Official Thread)

South Carolina is a long way removed from that final 4 run 2 years ago. They are 4-4 after losing to a 3-6 Wyoming team last night. SEC!!!

College basketball is such a fickle sport. Especially if you're not a blue blood, maintaining the kind of momentum you need to keep a program consistently good is so tough. You usually have to have the recruiting to win at a high level for more than a season or two and sometimes the recruiting only works when you have the on-court success (if a program is not cheating to get recruits), so it can become a downward spiral if you don't have one or the other. But in terms of the season and games you also need to have built a culture of winning and know how to make the most of what you have on your roster in any given season (especially when injury and transfer and early entry are constantly throwing curve balls and monkey wrenches into your best laid plans) and then there's so much parity in college basketball, you also need your fair share of luck.

Thad Matta was one of the best and most consistent coaches we've ever had, but it only took a few things here and there to start working against him (coming up second in some crucial recruitments--like Noah Vonleh and Rodney Hood--or Deshaun leaving early for Europe, or Ross leaving early for Europe, or the 2015 class being a flaky bust) to start the downward trend.

Terrible year for the Pac-12. At the moment, their top rated team in KenPom is #34 Oregon. Second-best is #44 Arizona St. That bodes well for other power conferences to get their bubble teams in the tournament.

The PAC has about 5-6 teams that i'd describe as "pretty bad". Cal, Wazzu, USC, Stanford and Utah have all been pretty hot garbage so far. Oregon State is 6-2 but theyll likely end up near the cellar as the season progresses. Gonna be hard for them to get much traction for at large bids when half the conference is a dumpster fire.
