2018-2019 B1G Men's Basketball (Official Thread)

hoosier wins:

marquette
louisville
msu

By the way, winning those 2 in December (Lville and Marquette) yet turning the season into the mush it has been is incredible work by Archie and his staff.

He took a new, very talented team playing open basketball and still managed to deliver an embarrassing season when scouting and gameplanning got dialed up in-conference.

the hoosiers on january 3rd: ranked 21st with a 12-2 (3-0) record and wins over marquette and louisville, as well as rivals butler and illinois.

going 2-12 since then is quite the drop for archie's team. what a shame.

only if they win the conference tournament.

It seemed like losses were being de-emphasized by the committee and that Q1 wins were put at a premium. IU has got the wins. I'm actually very curious to see what happens if they can finish out strong, though you would think it would be impossible for them to get an at-large based on the typical precedent.

Anyways, I'm mad at the Hoosiers for devaluing our upcoming Wisconsin game. Or maybe I'm mad at Wisconsin. Hoosiers tried to give that victory away multiple times.

I think IU has a better than average chance of getting in if they win their last 3 and don't have an embarrassing loss in the BTT. Very doable given MSU's injuries.

The B12 is not getting 8 teams in. TCU is now 6-9 and plays 2 of the top teams and another bubble team in its last 3. They aren't good enough to win 2 or those 3, but if they beat Texas (and one of the league leaders), that likely puts Texas on the outside of the bubble. I think that TCU/Texas matchup in the last game is a winner in/loser out game. Then there is Oklahoma at 5-10 in conference. They had a pretty good non-conference (not as good as Indianas), but if they lose 1 more game, I don't see 7-11 getting in without a run to the conf championship game. Their last 2 games are against Kansas and KSU.

It’s a pretty bizarre resume.

And @MSU when Sparty still had Ward.

There can't be a 14-14 team in the nation with better wins.

The impression I've gotten from IU is that they fundamentally have sufficient talent (though they could use more shooting), they just don't look well-coached 75% of the time.

Fran McCaffery got slapped with a two-game suspension after his profanity-laced postgame outburst at an official following Ohio State's 90-70 win over Iowa.

McCaffery will be suspended for the next two games against Rutgers and Wisconsin, Iowa Director of Athletics Gary Barta announced on Wednesday afternoon. The university has also been fined $10,000 for violating the Big Ten Sportsmanship Policy.

The suspension follows this report from Kyle Rowland of the Toledo Blade:

“Following the basketball game at Ohio State, Coach McCaffery made unacceptable comments to a game official in the hallway headed to the locker room,” Barta said in a release. “Fran’s comments do not represent the values of the University of Iowa, Hawkeye Athletics, and our men’s basketball program.

“Fran immediately accepted responsibility for his comments and understands the severe implications of his remarks. Fran fully understands this suspension and penalty imposed by the Big Ten Conference. Fran continues to have my full support moving forward.”

McCaffery offered his own statement in the release.

“I am in total agreement with the suspension by Iowa Athletics and the fine levied by the Big Ten Conference,” McCaffery said. “My comments directed toward a game official were regretful. I apologize to Big Ten Conference officials, Iowa Athletics, my players and staff, and the tremendous Hawkeye fans. This behavior is not acceptable and I take full responsibility for my inappropriate comments.”

I do not know but when an official gives technicals to both coaches during a game I begin to wonder about the officials. I do not know if it was the same guy that gave both technicals but those guys are usually a fraternity anyway and if one guy is getting crap from a coach and does not call a technical on the coach, his partner just might. Also, the technical on little McCafferty was weak as was the one on Holtmann.

Both T's were given for Um "over imaginative" responces to called fouls. They were by a different ref. I guess the refs didn't like being called names or having their judgement questioned.
