This chart from 11W pretty much says it all. Embarrassing, ridiculous.

URBAN MEYER STRUGGLING TO FIND SOLUTION TO OHIO STATE'S KICKOFF WOES

87305_h.jpg

Eight games into the season and more than three months since this year’s team began preseason practice, Ohio State still hasn’t figured out how to consistently and effectively execute a kickoff.

While Ohio State has made clear improvement on offense since the beginning of the season, and its defense has also made evident strides, its problems with kickoffs and covering them have only seemed to get worse.

Those problems nearly reached their nadir on Saturday, when the Buckeyes came dangerously close to losing their second game of the season to Penn State, in large part because of their inability to effectively kick the ball off.

While the Buckeyes ultimately survived for a 39-38 win, overcoming their special teams shortcomings thanks to a 19-point fourth-quarter, Ohio State coach Urban Meyer – whose teams have typically been among college football’s best on kickoffs – knows he must continue working to find a solution to his team’s kickoff woes to avoid being snakebitten by that problem later in the season.

"We're having our struggles kicking the ball, and we're taking the best kickoff team historically in this conference," said Meyer, whose team currently ranks 127th in the Football Bowl Subdivision in yards per kickoff (56.6) and seventh in the Big Ten in yards per opposing kickoff return (19.0). "We've always been top two or top three (in the conference), if I remember right, and it's a joke right now."

Well the PED game high is wearing off now and now I'm sick to my stomach thinking about how often we score. Scoring=kicking off...

landof10 wrote about the special teams and made a good point as they feel the special teams will be the result of being in a close game in one of our final regular season games.

God every year one of our units is atrocious though. Defense for the first 2-3 years of UFM, then the offense for 2 years, and now special teams this year. You should never be this bad at special teams because it's not rocket science to figure out a kick off. Kick it through the end zone.

REPORT CARD: UPDATED GRADES FOR EACH OHIO STATE POSITION GROUP AFTER EIGHT GAMES, WIN VS. PENN STATE

87324_h.jpg

The following grades for each Ohio State unit are meant to reflect each unit’s performance over the course of the entire season, not only the last game and including the games that were already graded in the first trimester. With that being said, though, these grades also seek to reflect how each unit has improved over the course of the season and performed in comparison to preseason expectation, while giving weight to big performances in big games, as the Buckeyes’ most recent game against Penn State certainly was.

FIELD GOALS/EXTRA POINTS: C
Sean Nuernberger has been mostly solid as a place kicker this year, making nine of 11 field goal attempts and all 45 of his extra point attempts. With that being said, Nuernberger has yet to convert a field goal of 40 yards or longer this season, with his only attempt of longer than 40 yards being blocked in the Buckeyes’ special teams debacle of a game against Maryland.

Nuernberger has done a good job consistently making the kicks he is supposed to make, but it remains unclear whether he can make a longer field goal or whether he can make a clutch kick in a pressure situation. That’s not Nuernberger’s fault, as he hasn’t been put in an opportunity to demonstrate whether he can, but it does keep the unit from earning a higher grade, as it leaves doubt about how much the Buckeyes can count on their ability to make a field goal with a game on the line.

KICKOFFS: F
After Ohio State allowed its second kickoff return touchdown of the season against Penn State and appeared incapable of executing a kickoff strategy that would pin opponents deep in their own territory, the Buckeyes’ kickoff unit can only be deemed as a failure so far this season.

Meyer has expressed that he is struggling to find a solution for the kickoff unit, as he does not believe his kickers can put the ball consistently through the end zone while kickoff coverage has also been substandard. The Buckeyes have switched multiple times now between Nuernberger and Blake Haubeil as kickoff specialists, and have made attempts to adjust their kickoff strategy, but the Buckeyes need to find something that works – and fast – to earn a passing grade for the year.

If they stop worrying about the "hang time" on the kickoff and tell the kicker to kick it to the endzone, we'll be fine. It's the hang time they are trying to get to pin the other team deep that's hurting us. They miss hit it and then bad things happen. Just boot the damn thing and get after it!

Parris Campbell has the 3rd highest KO return average in all of CFB at 36.6 (better than Barkley by the way)

As a team OSU is 2nd in the nation in KO returns at 28.16 YPR
somehow they are only #41 in KO return defense at 19 YPR but have given up 2 TD's

Punt returns are 97th at 4.87 ypr
Punt return Defense is 2nd in NCAA at 0.0 ypr (not kidding)

Net punting is quite good at #11 (41.83 ypp)

Neumberger is 9/11 on FG's

so it's weird, obviously the KO coverage and the lack of punt return yards are head scratchers given the talent they have to work with but all of special teams isn't a disaster

Those numbers don't take into account where the returner catches the ball on average and number of penalties for kicking OB, thus don't totally reflect average starting position which ultimately is the best measure of the unit.

Special teams continues to struggle. Seems like almost every punt is getting blocked or there is a hold that prevents it from getting blocked. Field goal kicking is bad. Neurenberger is 1/4 from 40-49 yards. Still would prefer this team just kick the ball through the endzone on kickoffs although there has been some improvement.
